Photographs are not mandatory but if you want your application to be complete, then you should provide one. Programs use the photographs to identify you when you come to interview, and as a memory aid when creating a rank list. Programs cannot view your photograph during their initial evaluation of your application. The photograph is not visible until you have been selected for interview.

how accurate is this? 50% of my programs have downloaded my photo, 1 interview as of 9/26. is there a difference in downloading\ and /viewing ?

"Downloaded" does not equal "viewed." Programs all seem to differ with regards to the frequency of their downloads, but rest assured that downloading has nothing to do with whether or not they've decided to interview you. It many cases it may be automated...I'm not sure exactly how it works, but it appears to be almost instantaneous at some programs. Basically, they may have downloaded your whole app but not even looked at it yet. Don't read anything into this downloaded / not downloaded stuff.

Actually, that is accurate -- the ERAS coordinator at my dean's office confirmed it..... i'm not sure on the nomenclature, downloading vs. viewing. but the program will definitely not know what you look like before they have offered you an interview.

which i think is fair.

True, but I don't think this is what the original poster was getting at. My impression was that the question was about whether it means a program isn't interested in you if it doesn't download your photo. That's different from saying that they'll know what you look like before they offer you an interview. In other words, my understanding is that programs don't selectively download and not download people's photos...they synchronize their system every so often, and whatever's available gets downloaded. Some synchronize more often than others, but thinking that they're purposely not downloading your photo because they're not interested in you just doesn't make sense to me. I just don't think that's how it works.

In the ERAS Preferences one can set what info will automatically be downloaded. I've left them at default. Also, may be some programs haven't even opened ERAS yet this season.

hmmm, i'm not sure i know what you are talking about... where are these ERAS preferences? i don't see any area where one can set what info will be downloaded automatically...

Ummm, I wasn't clear, and I mispoke.

I'm referring to ERAS Programs Director's Workstation - the client used by the residency, not the applicant interface.

I misspoke by confusing view and filter settings with the actual download process. If someone from the program connects with ERAS PostOffice, they can't select what will and will not be downloaded.

You know the residencies are running a big HotOrNot website for all applicants, right? You have to be ranked at 4/5 or higher to get an interview.

🙂

I think programs should look at your photo before they interview you. To not do so is to discriminate against hot people like me.
