I am from NY and was planning on staying here but recently also got accepted into Temple. I’ve never been to Philly, but the school seems to be more prestigious/ranked better. Is it worth leaving NY for? Before hearing from Temple, I was leaning toward Downstate for its community focused mission and diverse patient population, which is important to me. I was also planning on doing a combined MD/MPH there and would love to pursue public/community health type research. From talking with others and reading threads, I am worried about the uncertainty of University Hospital and the lack of support from the school admin compared to NYMC. Does anyone have any insights? I think downstate and NYMC match pretty similarly in NYC. Would appreciate any thoughts!

Downstate
Pros
  • community focus/diverse patient population
  • Cheaper (IS)
  • Opportunities in the city
  • Complete P/F
  • NBME exams
Cons
  • Older facilities
  • Supposed lack of support from admin
NYMC
Pros
  • Close to home
  • Westchester hospital - more of a teaching hospital (probably more chill than downstate hospitals)
  • Nicest campus
  • Students seem to be well supported
Cons
  • Less well known
  • Not really community focused
  • Rather be in a city
Temple
Pros
  • Also community focus/diverse patient population
  • More funding/research
  • More “prestigious”
Cons
  • Further from home/never been to Philly

You can't go wrong with either Downstate or NYMC. Downstate will almost certainly be cheaper. There have been threats to close down the hospital every year, but they are affiliated with a lot of other hospitals in the area. NYMC is in a nicer area.

Temple isn't more prestigious. Along that line, I don't think the ranking of any one of these schools should be a factor in your decision. Look at the match lists (although it's basically reading tea leaves), but it can give you a general idea of how well they match into whatever specialties you are interested in.

Downstate with PF and NBME exams is a good plus and probably cheaper right?
