Does anybody know if other(allopathic) residencies are available to podiatry graduates? I know that DO's can apply to allopathic residencies once they take the USMLE's. Can DPM's? thanks

The answer is no. Beside the obvious that DPMs have limited scope of practice restricted to the foot and ankle (so they cant be a cardiologist for example), in order to apply to an allopathic residency you must have taken the USLME. DPMs are not able to sit for this exam but DOs can. Hope that helps.

thanks for the response!

You can do some fellowships with MDs such as orthopedic surgery.

Just a quick note (even though it doesn't really have much connection to the OP) - you don't have to take the USMLE to apply for a allo residency as a DO. Most allo programs take the COMPLEX or the USMLE. It is true that some programs only accept the USMLE, but it is a much lower amount then those that accept both tests.

I was just made aware of this change. Thank you for the clarification.

so just how diverse are the residencies available to podiatrists. i think all i hear of is the "24 and 36 month podiatric treatment and surgery" ones. Orthopaedic as well? Thanks for the input. you all are so knowledgable!

Each residency has certain requirements that they must met but they all have their own personality. It is hard to define "diversity." Most of the "diversity" is in the fellowships (external fixation, vascular surgery, cosmetic fellowships). Don't get me wrong each residency has their differences but they all have to meet the CPME minimums. Plus some residencies have "affiliations" with certain fellowships.
