Does anyone remember Dr JPH?

He was big in the osteo forms until a year ago when all of a sudden, he was banned for some reason unknown to me. I'd like to ask/say two things:

(1) Does anyone know why he got banned? I clicked on his name and read his more recent posts, but they all seemed fine to me. This has been a big mystery for me since January '08.

(2) I want to say thanks to this unknown person for all his (or her?) posts. Years ago when I was a 'lurker' on SDN I learned about osteopathic medicine primarily from reading his/her comments. I still read his comments, and I learn something new from them every week at least. I'll be ready to start a new thread to ask a question and sure enough, Dr JPH answered it years ago. Also, I became parital towards PCOM because of JPH as he/she was a student there. If JPH is any indication of the students at PCOM, then I'm in for a treat!

Thanks again!🙂

Thought he had another username now, which was similar to his old one

JPH was a great asset to the DO forums, and his dedication to improving osteopathic medicine and using OMM in post surgery patients was awesome. However, he - much like myself - battled, a lot. He was also very smart, and witty, and won ... a lot. This meant that every little noob who he insulted or foolish pre-med he pwned complained over and over and eventually he was gone. Honestly though, he was a very valued member ... and because of it, he was given a ton of chances before he was finally banned. In fact, I think he was gone for like 6 months before actually coming back and getting banned. The mods aren't going to say why they banned him, and if he is lurking around ... I'm not aware of what his new name is.

Why? How do you know they won't?

If you break the rules, then you get punished. I get that. But it seems silly and downright unfair not to announce what rules a person broke. If you announce why a person gets banned, then that (a) serves as a deterrent to future would-be law breakers, preventing future SDN 'crime', and (b) helps deter admins from abusing their powers.

Well I'm hoping you're wrong JaggerPlate. Maybe an admin just hasn't read this post yet (there are 1000's on SDN after all!) After all Dr JPH did, I can't believe he was a trouble maker. And SDN seems like a lovely place for discussion so I doubt they just banned him for rubbing a few people the wrong way.

Perhaps it was just a misunderstanding! Maybe we can help clear it up 👍

We cannot publically discuss why a member was banned as this is a privacy issue. We do not take banning a long-time member lightly. The "rules" around here are clearly explained in the Terms of Service of SDN.

BTW: iloveDrStill--there are around 10 administrator on SDN. We do have a number of moderators and assistant moderators.

I know because I know. I'm not wrong ... read what DrMom just said, and no ... you don't have the right to know. This is an annoymous internet forum, not public record. People don't have to tell you jack about themsevles, and you can't view infractions, warnings, bannings etc (unless it says 'banned for trolling' under the xed name). JPH was great, and he wasn't a 'trouble maker,' but the guy never walked away from a battle ... and like I said, he won them, the losers got pissed, and everyone reported it. He also wasn't banned 'lightly,' and everyone appreciated his input on the boards, and wishes that he could have followed TOS and remained a member. Have some faith in the mods/admins though ... they know what they're doing (most of the time :meanie: jk).

Sorry, I meant to say that there are 1,000s of posts on SDN, not admins! My bad. I meant to say that you guys are busy, but I guess I ended up saying the opposite

Surely using an alias on an online forum provides enough privacy for all of us.

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. You banned Dr JPH with no explanation to protect his right to privacy? Or perhaps you think it prudent to protect the people who were wronged, to protect their privacy, so you can't make a comment like "Dr JPH called ilovedrstill a racist name". If this is the case, I still don't see why you can't say something like "Dr JPH swore profusively" or "Dr JPH was abusive". That doesn't seem to break privacy at all. In fact it would seem to be more detrimental to his rights as a valued SDN user to summarily expel him with no explanation to the community, for reasons I gave before.

Anyway I'll stop talking now as I doubt you'll change your policy over my comments! 🙂 It's too bad SDN is run like this. I hope it changes in the future to become a little less Freemason and a lot more transparent.

If you're reading this Dr JPH, thanks again!

Fair enough! I never said I/we have the right to know why people get banned. I just believe that it would make the forum better, that's all. You mentioned the "banned for trolling" text: that's great, it warns people not to troll. Why not do that for all infractions? Using privacy as an excuse just seems bizarre...of course, the people who own SDN can do what they want. We post at their pleasure  🙂

Like anyone else banned from SDN, DrJPH was clearly informed of the issues where he was violating the TOS. It is nobody else's right to know. At SDN, we are participants in the TRUSTe Privacy Program. It would be negligent of us to violate this privacy program by publicizing why various members were banned just to fulfill other members' curiosity.

Outside of trolls and spammers, there is actually a multiple step process involved in banning someone from this site. It is never a mystery to those involved and there are multiple opportunities for members to change course, follow the TOS, and stay on SDN.

Bottom line, if you follow the Terms of Service of SDN, you'll be home free.

You argee to a set terms of service (TOS) when you sign up to be a member for this site. Repetitive infractions against these terms result in your removal from the site. You are supposed to know these, and abide by them in signing up to be a member at SDN. No one's rights are being stepped on, again - this is an internet forum, not public records, and if you disagree with the TOS you are free to leave the site. However, these are the terms ... and you're correct, you aren't going to change them. The site really isn't run strictly, and people aren't getting banned for no reason. Also, like MOM said, this is a truste site, and that = privacy. It would be like if the site required your first name, home town, and phone number upon creating an account and I demanded to know these because I felt that it would be beneficial to conversations in the forums. It's just how things are done.

LOL yes, my suggestion to extend the policy of writing "banned for XXX" to include the other bannable offenses and not just spamming and trolling, is JUST like requiring personal identifiers such as your real name and address...

😕

And TRUSTe certainly does not equal privacy. Read about it here if you'd like.

It would be negligent of us to violate this privacy program by publicizing why various members were banned just to fulfill other members' curiosity.

But you already do it for spammers and trolls. Why do you violate their privacy and not other rule breakers?

No one's rights are being stepped on, again - this is an internet forum, not public records, and if you disagree with the TOS you are free to leave the site.

Read what I already posted. I agree that one can either 'take it or leave it' in regards to being on SDN. You're missing the point.

Anyway this is a silly conversation, like I said nothing's going to change, so I think I will stick with Bacchus' explanation and move on! 🙂

You're a she? Forget it, I don't want to know.
I avoid the "What do you look like" thread like the plague.

Hey now, just because I want to know what the guy looks like is not an indication that I fancy him.

Just forget it!
