Just because somebody knows one subject well doesn't mean they know all subjects well. He can be competent in his area of expertise while still promoting quackery when discussing other areas of medicine. I admit I don't watch him, but how many of the questionable things he promotes actually have anything to do with heart surgery?
 
Is he highly regarded? Not everything you read on the internet is true.... and Oprah isn't known for keeping intelligent company

I wonder how often regularly practicing physicians have to deal with disagreements from patients whose rebuttal is "But, Dr. Oz said..."

I live in the south and the family physician I shadowed said that she hears people saying that stuff all the time. I can't even count how many times she turned bright red when someone brought it up.

All those middle aged women are just hypnotized by his big package. Or wish they could have married someone like that.

Or it's all Oprah's fault.
 
If you need cardiac surgery, I know some good guys in the city that actually know what they are doing. That is all I am going to say.

I don't have time to explain or argue with people now, but nobody in their right mind disputes Oz as being an excellent CV surgeon. I introduced my uncle to him when he needed several valves replaced 8-9 years ago. At that time, I wouldn't let anyone but him do valve work in NYC. I have no idea how his volume has been the last couple of years and he is likely operating a lot less with all his other things going on. But, do not think for a second that he isn't a) a very smart guy and b) top top in CV surgery.

As for the other stuff, meh. I haven't looked at it nor do I care about it. I don't really fault people for wanting to make money or be the face of something. Maybe medical school/residency has jaded me, but the American public doesn't want to listen to doctors talking about real issues. If they want to listen to someone selling bs, good for him to make money off of it.

As a current resident I have to assume you were at best just starting med school at this time... what criteria did you use in determining he is the only one worthy of operating?

It was a figure of speech. I did not mean it literally. Every patient/family wants 'the best'.

A couple of things in no particular order of importance. Not saying that I did all of these, but things that would matter to me...

- He is a doctor's doctor. Common name when doctors are asked who they would see.
- Top of most cardiologist's list/CV surgeons
- Looking at his training, making calls to people who he trained under/with (only really works if you have someone that can make these calls for you if you are young)
 
That..... that isn't a figure of speech... so Oz did or did not do your uncles surgery? 😕
 
And how do you know these things? Is your program based out of the hospital he works/ed at?

I was responding to this when I said it was a figure of speech. I thought that would be rather clear from my explanation about not being literal. It isn't like I said, "Oz or bust". I simply meant that it was clear from my (and my family's) research that he was the one to go to. Tristate area, year that it was, what our access to health care was etc. It lined up that he was the #1 on the list.

I'm not really sure what you are trying to ask. How does one know what things? You ask. It pays to know people. I met Oz through non-medical channels (went to school with his daughter). That was my initial contact. But most of the information came from simply asking physicians we knew in the field. It helps to have an academically oriented 'science' family. *shrug*

On the show he said he operates once a week these days. Still enough to keep his skill up, IMHO. He may not be up to date on the latest and greatest (which I assume is why he flat out says "I like to have someone who does this every day standing by my side when I'm operating"), but it sounds like he's plenty capable.

Right.... and preceding it was a personal anecdote in which he was still specifically chosen nearly a decade ago... so I was curious what criteria a pre med would use to determine surgical ability. You have now answered that 👍


Regardless I don't think skill was the issue. Houdini was incredibly skillful. Doesn't mean id trust him. And in recent years Oz has sold out and actively endorses herbal remedies with a convenient disclaimer on his site. Cash in on online programs and make sure all the PCPs get left answering the "but doctor Oz said".. I don't care much if the guy is good at vascular surgery, he is still misleading the public... or at least supporting unverified treatments for personal gain

It was actually the criteria that a professor of medicine at Wash U decided to use to judge the right surgeon to go to. But okay? I guess you know about a surgeon's ability than everyone else in the world, maybe based on something that is completely irrelevant?

The question that was asked by the OP was regarding Oz as a surgeon. Hype vs. accomplishment. Good for you, you hate him. You don't think skill matters when picking a surgeon? You don't trust someone that the heads of departments would take their families to because of a TV personality? I'm sorry that you are so angry at him for what he does, we simply think about physicians differently.

I had a personal experience with him functioning as a surgeon. I did research, albeit on a personal level on this topic. I'm not pretending to know the ins and outs of him. I thought that I would share my thoughts. It was the opinion of many in the field that he was the person for the job. I consider their opinions more important than yours and I assume your convictions are more important than anything anyone here can say. So there is no point going further.

Are you serious? How is asking you how you qualified your statement of skill the same as saying I know the skill better than anyone else? Your responses are starting to smack of butthurt.... if you go back and read you will notice that I have not commented on his skill as a surgeon. I've only expressed issue with his endorsements. 🙄

Also, you came in here and expressed some very specific views that hinted at first hand knowledge so I asked, (and reasonably, mind you) how you could make such statements and why we should trust the anecdotes from some faceless nameless somebody on the other end of the web. I didn't even argue with you :laugh: do you respond this strongly with everyone what asks you to support a claim? Yowza
 
I've been on his show a couple times recently. It's true that he still operates every week. Amazing, given the amount of TV and writing he does. He's also a nice guy. Was very gracious to me each time I met him. Agree or disagree with some of the holistic remedies he promotes, the guy is a uber-successful and has helped many, many people live healthier lives.
 
My problem with so many of these guys is the total and complete lack of evidence for their claims.....

Here are scrub rules

1. If you are in a ROAD specialty, Psych, Onc, or any specialty that is not general; please don't where scrubs and a lab coat. Everybody knows that scrubs are dirty and lab coats spread germs

2. If you are in a specialty that requires it (surgery,IM), don't wear it outside the hospital.

3. Once you become an attending or chief resident, invest in a VERY good suit. If you got a big bonus use it on bespoke clothing or pay your medical school debt.

Not to mention the many older folks out there who praise the medical advice - but I think its reasonable for them to seek knowledge from Dr. Oz on local television because these older folks are clearly not tech savy and can't just google osteoporosis symptoms or youtube yoga videos for a healthy life style, ya digg?

Screw you, I'm wearing scrubs. I went into radiology so I could work without wearing pants, and until I finish residency scrubs will be my compromise.

I find it interesting that he thinks that anesthesiologists and orthopedic surgeons shouldnt be wearing scrubs. I guess wearing tails and wingtips in the OR is SOP nowadays 🙄

also, +1 on the no pants thing. Pants suck. They are the first thing to go every day when I get home.

ive been forwarded emails from my mom who got them from my grandfather who was asking specific things he gathered from Oz (who shall henceforth be known as "The Wizard" for the potions and spells he advocates) and other such shows and natural health publications. One of the recent ones was the health benefits of drinking hot beverages after every meal. The japanese do this! :idea: and anything they [probably don't] do MUST be good for us because they all [probably dont] live to 100+ like Mr. Miagi! He was told something about how the warm beverages dissolve fats in the diets while cold drinks will cause them to solidify.... and somehow this turns into "you will die soon and probably get diabeetus" :shrug: genius..... moral of the story, I agree with what you said here.

Johnny, i did not know you were a radiologist. Why don't you apply for the physician label. Also, wearing pants does not means jeans or khakis. What about sweat pants?

I said when it was essential note that i put surgery in the essential part.
