I was curious to know what, if any, speech recognition software are you guys using - either for individual or departmental purposes; mainly to input into the EHR? We are hearing good reviews about Dragon - Medical version.

Thanks,
PF

We've been using Dragon in our group--mixed reviews. I'd rather hammer out sketchy prose into our EMR templates, myself. And as a result, I haven't invested the time into "teaching" it.

I haven't done it myself, but one of the former residents used to use a combination of Dragon with templates. He would pull up a template for a note and then use a combination of deleting and dictating into dragon at certain points. He said it was the best of both worlds. It seems like a good idea and one I might try someday.

I've worked with a family med doc who used it extensively. I am a typically an early adopter, but I don't think it's quite there yet. Don't get me wrong, it's very impressive, but I think that, at this point, you can be more productive by either typing or using templates.

Thank you for your inputs. I have seen a psychologist use it in the Psychiatry department and she seemed to think highly of it.

I bought Dragon Naturally speaking version 11 premium for the purpose not of dictation for the medical record, b/c our facility has a good system itself, but b/c I was tired of writing out what was said in weekly psychotherapy encounters. I liked to have a record of what was said, as sometimes looking back through the notes I would see patterns that I had not seen if I was just writing down general themes discussed. I bought Dragon knowing that it was unlikely to work for what I was intending it, but at the same time wanting to try just to see if there was that slight chance that it would. It didn't work at all though, and I could tell within the first session of using it that no amount of training was going to be useful for that. When I was training it to just my voice it was Ok though.
