  1. Dental Student

Since being accepted I can do nothing except think about how exciting it will be to be a dental student at Pacific!! Yeah! I just have a couple questions for anyone that would like to give their 2 cents:

1. I have been told that there is no official dress code at Pacific, but what is the average student wearing? Dressy, business casual, Jeans ever?

2. Is there a corelation between study time and class grades? I know plenty of students in undergrad who never studied and still pulled decent grades and those who studied like crazy and still had a hard time. Is this the same at pacific? Until what time do most people stay at school and study in the evenings?

3. If any body has any time left in the day or on the weekends, what kind of extracuricular activities do people do?

4. Last, do most people bring their lunch from home, buy at the school, or buy from somewhere else close on a daily basis? I know tuition and living is expensive so do people really scrape and save or do most live frivolously?

Thanks for any replies, hope to see you all in a few months!!!

1. There is an official dress code, and it is business casual. Ties are technically required but mostly optional for 1st years. You can dress down for anatomy.

2. Yes, but there's different strokes for different folks. Some people work in the lab all night every night (Yours truly), some hit the library at all hours, and some never do anything and still do great. It all depends on you. If you really want to kick *** though, just suck it up first year and work in the lab Friday night and Saturday morning, pay for a tutor and you'll be fine.

3. Everything and anything you can imagine. Ciontrary to popular belief the majority of of our students aren't stressballs.

4. It's probably equally divided between those 3. Some people eat out every day, others go home for lunch every day, and some of us maintain a healthy balance of D. All of the above 😀

Good luck, feel free to ask more questions, and see you in July!

1. Business casual, which isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. On anatomy days 1st year you get to wear cadaver-casual (i.e. - jeans)

2. There is always going to be people whose study and performance seem disproportional. That is life. However, for the majority of people, the more you study the better you will do. At pacific, as far as studying goes the first year is the hardest. The first 2 quarters I was usually at school about 12hrs a day (that doesn't include homework. That is just class and lab time), studying a few hours after that at home, and then studying about 10hrs a day on weekends. But I don't want to specialize and I was getting burnt out, so this quarter I'm at school about 10 hrs a day, no studying on weekdays except for quizzes, and about 5ish hours a day on the weekends. My grades are still decent but definitely lower. Either way it's a lot of time but you get used to it.

3. A lot of people like to go out to clubs, bars, etc. It is always someone's birthday so there is always a celebration. In season, a lot of people go up to Tahoe for skiing/boarding. Besides that we have some surfers, b-ball on fridays, some of us go rock climbing Fri/Sun...there is a lot to do around here. SF is a cool town.

4. I pretty much always bring a lunch. But the lunches they sell at school are pretty cheap and big. Not much for vegetarians though. Some people try to limit spending, some people are really rich and don't have to, while others figure they will be making a good salary so might as well spend and be happy. I'm not a big spender, but I'm not living off of top-ramen either. When you are looking at $200,000-$300,000 worth of loans, counting pennies to save maybe a couple thousand seems like more work than it's worth.

1. There is a detailed dress code, which will be explained to you during your orientation. You can also find it in the Pacific 'white book' code of ethics and something something. Just as Pine and Armor mentioned, business casual.
I can only speak for guys; Dress shoes, dress shirt, dress pants and a tie. I have never seen the dress code being enforced, but students usually do a good job of maintaining a professional appearance, specially when in clinical contact with patients. No jeans, no flip flops, no caps ...
And then there are always those who just wear cordoroids, polo shirts and skechers to clinic, and they too seem to be fine.

2, 3, 4. What Armor and Pine said.

Congrats on your acceptance.

The only thing I have to add is to the dress code comments. Yes, there is an official one. No it doesn't seem to be enforced strictly, but just cause it isn't enforced, doesn't mean the faculty and administrators don't notice when you slack on it. You'll also find, after a few weeks, that when you dress down, you feel awkward walking into the school during school hours.

After school hours, you can go home, change, and return to sim lab in plain clothing.

Also, Anatomy-Lab-Casual applies ONLY to Anatomy Lab. You will find people who come to school on Anatomy Lab days in jeans and sweatshirts and Ts, but that is actually against the dress code since the entire day is never spent only in Anatomy Lab...you have Biochem or anatomy lecture on those days too. Officially, you are only allowed to wear casual clothing to, during, and from the actual lab. The rest of the time you are supposed to change back into business casual, but with no private locker rooms to change in...people flub this mandate all the time.
