Dress code in Veterinary School?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay... thanks twelvetigers. Now I get it. It's generally a t-shirt, and of course, not part of our dress code.

Man it sounds like you guys shop a lot. I never have money for clothes shopping. If my sister hadn't loaned me all her maternity clothes, I don't know what I would have done. I guess clothes just aren't a priority for me right now. Maybe when I graduate, get a job, and have extra income. I only buy new clothes when someone gets me a gift card

I'm a big thrift-store shopper, gift-card user, and sale-lover. For example, I'm waiting until I have enough cashback points on my Discover card to buy some Banana Republic gift cards that will get me about 25 percent off (I was given $120 for xmas for clothes, so if I get gift cards with 120 in cashback dollars I'll have about 150 to spend). I'm signed up for their emails, so I'm waiting for a good 40 percent off sale, and I like to get sale and clearance items even then. I can get some screamin' deals on very well-made clothes that actually fit (BR and its sister companies have good petite and tall sizes).

Thrifting is even better as far as deals go, but I'm hard to fit, so I get a really tailored dress or something I'll have to get it altered, which kind of negates the savings. For unstructured, flowy things like jersey skirts I'm usually fine 🙂

I don't buy clothing often, but it's fun to think about 🙂 Being a broke student does put a damper on things. 🙁 Something that you'd need a whole new wardrobe for, like a pregnancy, would be very hard to do without someone to borrow from.

But for some reason, Target has a stupid amount of maternity clothing and around here it always seems to end up on clearance. You can get tops for like 3 bucks each if you are lucky.

Respect. I don't own flip flops anymore 🙂. And isn't it amazing what a blazer can do for an outfit? 😀

I think it's great your school requires that you dress well - in the "real world," you never know when you'll need to impress someone.

I'm currently working on a better wardrobe. Any suggestions for places to buy or useful pieces to own?

I own one pair of flip flops that I wear exclusively at the beach. I hate it when adults wear flip flops as if they are actual shoes (although that could have more to do with my distaste for seeing a stranger's feet... feet gross me out).

I just wanted to a few more stores to the list, JCrew Factory. They are constantly having sales and the stuff is already cheaper than at JCrew. The clothing is a little different than the regular JCrew store (a bit less fashion-y and more classic?) but there's a lot of great stuff and they add things regularly. I've gotten a few sweaters from there this past holiday season and the quality is nice.

I actually get a lot of my blouses at Target. My "uniform" for work is slacks, blouse, cardigan. Their Merona cardigans are about $20 and very comfortable. I think they are 92% cotton with a little synthetic? I can't wear wool (too itchy) so I live in cotton cardigans. As for blouses, their inventory changes so quickly that they always seem to have something. You have to be judicious just at like any other cheaper store but there are some good finds out there.

Oh, and Lands End! Yes, this is where my mother shops but their Canvas line has really cute, "younger" styles and they have great sales. I love their classic button-down blouses and recently got a pair of black straight leg chinos on super sale that fit great. They tailor the inseam to whatever length you prefer (for free!) so it's a nice option if you are tall.

It's true! Sometimes I see really cute stuff in the maternity section and curse the Target Gods for not making it non-maternity sizes.

Growing up in AZ, I will always wear flip flops as actual shoes, because they are and they work the best in the hot summers. 🙂

That makes sense. I just really get squicked out by other people's naked feet. Especially hairy men feet... *shudder*

You really don't want to know how many blazers I have or blazer type jackets. =D

Anyway I literally threw out well donated my entire closet when I got into the business world. Casual for me in a button up, jeans and flats.

I shop mainly at Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Gap, Old Navy and Talbots. While all have a high price point aside from Old Navy I do NOT buy anything that isnt on sale. I've signed up for emails and really never buy any of their new releases with out substantial discount.

I just bought a new release Loft spring blazer that I fell in love with for 50% off in store when they were having a one day flash sale. Of course it meant I had to quickly pop in and get it but I got a great piece for $40 bucks. I also got one of Gaps Academy blazers which are super nice and lined in a closeout color in store for $30 dollars and an additional 25% off. In order to do this a supply a wardrobe I do go shopping more often then the average person but sale racks in these store namely the Gap brand stores change all the time. I monitor my email for any sales, coupons, discounts ect.

Old navy is great for some base layer pieces so I never count it out, they also have decent cheaper flats that I use for more casual outfits
Jeans come from the Gap or occasionally Loft, but they have a stretchier denim material that I am not overly fond of. I love these jeans because they have plain pockets meaning you can dress them up or down. I have a couple of pairs of Banana Republic jeans that I got on super discount. I need to have them taken in as I have lost weight since their purchase. Slacks, pencil skirts and suits are Banana Republic. Loft I use for more fun pieces as they have fun prints and colors. I just bought a pair of light blue skinnies that I cant wait to wear as I have this navy blazer that will look AMAZING with them.

Talbots is typically viewed as a an older womans store but you can pick up some nice staple pieces here. I have a corduroy red blazer I love from here also have a paisley pencil skirt that I get complements on all the time. I dont particularly like low rise jeans and I like the fit of their denim I haven't had chance to purchase any yet though just tried them on. I do own a lovely pair of cords from them. Now shoes Talbots shoes are 😍. I own three pairs of flats two of which were $100 new and I bought on closeout from our local store for $20 yes that is an 80% discount. I love them also my interview shoes a nice pair of professional easy to walk in black heels for $40. They fit so well are are comfortable for walking across campus and dont rub my heels. I get shoe complements all the time and people are shocked when I say Talbots.

This is all REALLY helpful, thanks so much! I love BR and it's sister companies for the fit, but I never thought to check Talbot's. I need some good pumps and flats...

There are definitely some target pieces in my maternity wardrobe. Old Navy usually has good deals on their maternity stuff so when I got a $50 gift card there for Christmas, I was able to score 5 pieces.

Yeah, I got the shopping bug from my mom who got the shopping bug from her mom. My undergrad was strangely fashionable, even the premeds. Then, I got to MSU, where the dress code is alive and kicking wildly. You should see how well some of the vet students dress everyday...the girls and the guys, while some barely scrape by the code, others look as if they're BBF's with Ivanka Trump and shop in NYC.

Best advice I have is to shop by the sales, shop often - the actual stores if you can; if you can't, online. Try Marshall's and TJ Maxx as well as the others listed above. Thrift stores in big cities and Rummage Sales often have some nice stuff someone else doesn't want or need or doesn't fit right, but a lot of the stuff is current.

This is really good to know! I'm 5'11 so "regular" length pants usually end up looking ridiculous on me. I buy my jeans almost exclusively from Old Navy now because they're the only company I've found that always has talls on the rack, and they're fairly cheap at less than $30/pair. Khakis and dress slacks are always hard to find in talls though, which is part of the reason why I currently only own one pair of each.

I miss aussie slang! 😍

I just have to chime in about Banana Republic. I have to dress business casual for my job and BR is my go-to place. I actually have a BR card that I use when I buy clothes there and I rack up points that get me discounts. It's seriously the easiest thing on the planet ... I feel like I get an email every month or two that I've earned $10, $20, or $30 off. I always buy sale items and I never spend more than I can pay off in a month so I don't carry a balance and pay interest. I can also use the BR card at Gap and Old Navy 🙂

Oh, and BR offers a military discount if you shop in store 👍

I feel like a walking contradiction/hypocrite in that I generally dress pretty well, but I have several very obvious large tattoos and pierced ears. That's just part of my style. I don't buy a lot of the arguments behind dress codes, but I do think they're good from an aesthetic perspective. Like, I understand that yoga pants/tights/leggings are now considered "pants" by a lot of people, but they're still tacky looking and unflattering on most individuals. As a rule, I don't wear sweatpants or workout clothes outside of the gym, and I think people wear jeans way too often when it's so easy to add a little variety to how you look. I don't think those things make people less professional or less capable, but it would be nice if we all tried a little harder to have some style. To me, it's not even about dressing up for other people. Of course, the problem is that when guys care, people start throwing around the "M word" or worse.

Ugh no kidding. I had a guy friend who was always complaining that men's clothing and shoes were so boring, and he was as hetero a bro as you could find. I think it's sad that we use culturally "feminine" things like being well-groomed as a pejorative.

I don't mind the rough and tumble look on anyone, but it's so nice to see a well-groomed person, especially a fella, because it's not encouraged as much for men. I LOVE seeing well-dressed men!

I wish it was easier to add variety. I have so much trouble finding everyday pants that aren't blue jeans that also aren't super skinny.

Since when did metrosexual become a politically incorrect word. It means a straight guy who cares about his appearance. It is an accurate description. What is the problem? (of course not like anyone would ever confuse me with one:laugh:)

My understanding is that it's a thinly veiled way of saying "a heterosexual male that cares about how he looks, kind of like how homosexual males do." I mean, why is "sexual" even in the word? Caring about clothing and your appearance has little to do with your sexual preferences. I think it also gives the connotation that heterosexual men do not care an ounce about their looks and that if they do, they're so far outside the norm that they need their own label. It feels icky to me.

Metrosexual is only an insult if homosexual is an insult...

MSU has a dress code that spells out everything that's appropriate and inappropriate. In the beginning, the code seemed to be a chore, but no longer. After a month or two it made dressing in the morning easy.

Nah. I don't really care if people think one way or another about me but it just strikes me as just another stupid buzzword created by tabloids and mass media. Not buying it. "Dapper" also sounds better.

I disagree. Metrosexual is a stereotype.

Semantics aside, dapper is a much better word. Or smart or stylish or fashionable. Or gosh, just well dressed.

It seems to me that "metrosexual" is just one of those unfortunate words that society uses to police gender performance. Only women are "supposed" to care about their physical appearance and grooming, so men who also like to appear well-groomed are mocked. No fun.

BUT! For those of you who have been expressing Banana Republic love, you can buy two full-priced items online today and get 40% off if you use the code BRLOVE. Just got the email this morning. FYI 🙂
