Anyone else get it? Do they screen? If so, what percentage get it? What are my chances of interview at this point? Thanks!

oh cool... nice to know that they are sending secondaries. How did you get them? by email or snail mail ?

Yes, they screen pretty hardcore. They focus on URM's and women; last year only 2 white males (my demo) enrolled in the class of 24ish. Don't know how many they interview, but check the MSAR or US News.

got it by snailmail today. It's a big orange envelope with a poster and about 8 questions asking about my background and such. Only 50 bucks for this one, so pretty cool. I guess they do want to serve the poor and underserved 😀 .

two years ago:

(roughly)
1600 apps
800 secondarys (could have been 400 though)
250 interviews
50 acceptances
24 enrolled

i know there were at least two asians in c/o 07, and i was accepted for c/o 08.

being committed to serving the undeserved is probably secondary to your ethnicity if you're true about your intentions. at my interview, less than half of the other interviewees were URM.

I got a Drew Secondary too, but at my Perm Mailing address so I haven't got a chance to look at it. For those who have it, what are the essay quesitons on there?

I think I got one because I am a disadvantaged applicant who more or less grew up in poverty. And I have shown commitment to helping the underserved Asian population through clinical involvement and outreach efforts.

Ditto for me on this but sub "Appalachian" for Asian. Crossing my fingers I have an envlope in the mail tonight.

um, I don't think it has much to do with your background, or else I wouldn't have gotten one (white male upper-middle class whitewashed background). But I have shown committment to the underserved at my job in a clinic in the inner city, working in a hospital in africa, etc. I'll turn in the secondary, but I'm just worried about the current state of the program considering what happened last year at Drew/King hospital. Anybody current on that one?

Yeah, I got mine yesterday! I am URM who has shown a commitment to work with underservered populations, specifically with incarcerated women. Actually, working with women in prisons is my whole motivation for becoming an M.D.

i'm not really current, but thats the main reason why i chose not to go there. There hasnt been any negative press for a few months though.

i hope i get the secondary...im waiting by my mailbox...

ME TOO !! 😀

aww this school is messed up, so cacausion people can't get in? No offense people but that's reverse racisim. Reminds me of a research taht I tried to apply to (funded by NIH) in which only latinos, african americans and native americans were eligble to apply. I personally think it's hella unfair and it should be open to all races, and same thing goes for the Drew school. (Talking about affirmative action)

they don't screen according to race but the mission of the school is to serve the underserved and less priviledged communities and if that is what you really want to do and mentioned that in your essay or have some kind of a work experience that shows that then they will surely send you a secondary. however if that is not what you are looking to do then drew is not the school for you.

its great that you have this kind of perspective. i dont think drew does not accept candidates SOLELY based upon ethnicity. however, if you were caucasian, poor, lived in a rural area and wanted to serve the underserved i am pretty sure they would look at your application....

Drew Hospital's residency programs (not the university or med school itself) had some accreditations revoked because of some rather serious findings that resulted in poor education and patient care. A recent update on the situation from early July appears here:

http://www.californiahealthline.org/index.cfm?Action=dspItem&itemID=104087

You can look at Drew's own press releases to see what they've been doing since.

http://www.cdrewu.edu/site/calendar/news.asp

And here's a scary MSN article:

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4780341/

I'm not expert, but just found this on google.

Regarding race issues, research shows that patients receive a higher quality of care from providers with similar ethnic backgrounds. That's not to say that I or any other posters would not be able to care adequately for someone of a different race. Drew's mission is to best provide for the underserved, and each of us can judge on our own how accurately they fulfill that mission.

has anyone on the east coast got the secondary yet? just wondering..im in NYC...im hoping the mail is just taking longer.

thanks you make me feel much better. maybe it will come today or saturday. if it doesnt come by monday...i guess im not getting one.... 🙁

hate to bother you all again...but anyone with a drew secondary on the east coast? thanks!

ok i got so worried about this secondary i actually called the school. yes this was my first time doing so. hopefully no one is alarmed about not receiving a secondary. i talked to the person who was sending the secondaries out...apparently they are doing in some kind of weird order....from what i can figure they are sending them out either by last name starting with Z....but then she said something like they did Z, then T then F....weird...or maybe she meant they did Z to F? but why would she mention T? i suppose they are just doing it randomly so that no one gets an advantage and if they do...its due to random selection or something like that.

yeah i was wondering what was going on with them... haven't heard from them yet. hopefully it is just the last name thing 🙂

For those of ya'll who have the Drew secondary, did you really type the info into the documents they sent us? I don't have a type writer, and so I am scanning the documents, and then typing into them. But, it is kind of a hassle, and the quality is not so great.
ok thanks

don't have this one yet. are there any essays?

i'm not really sure how to go about writing onto the Drew secondary either. the space is extremely limited and they want you to trype your entire response into 2-3 inches and it's such an ordeal to format the type on my page setup. i didn't even think about scanning, but i've already did a page like this . . . so eh.

can someone please post the secondary questions? 🙂

Spoke a little bit soon there. They just lost their accrditation and are probably closing their trauma center within the next year. Not really looking good for the hospital right now.

yeah the hospital is not looking good and the secondary looks horrible. ugh.

Whoa! That's quite an update. Can you please share the source for those of us who really consider it a top choice? Thanks!

The shutting down of the trauma center has been on the news almost everyday. I heard there have been several protests but I doubt they will keep it open. It is so unfortunate because the community is in such a great need of this trauma center 👎

thanks for posting the questions !!

I just got mine today. From what i've heard, they're pretty picky with the entire application process. I don't know what percentage but I know that UCLA is one of the slowest-acceptance. One of my friends who is a 3rd yr. told me that he didn't get his acceptance till september. 🙁 Anyways, good luck.

if any of you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask. im a student there and can try to share as much info as i can. i have finals this week so it may take me some time to answer, but nonetheless make sure you ask.

for the secondary, you may type on a separate sheet of paper and attach it; you shouldnt type more then about the space provided.

as far as the hospital, lots of things are going on right now. it doesnt directly effect the students in the program; they will be trained elsewhere, i.e., other county hospitals, in 3rd and 4th year if need be. remember, your class (if you start next year) wouldnt even begin clinicals until what, 4 years from now. so many things can happen by then.

i urge everyone to apply. dont not apply just becuase you hear stuff in the news. if you believe in the mission and have shown it, apply. dont miss out on the opportunity. its an amazing program.

good luck.

I got a postcard saying that they recieved my application and will contact me in writing about my status by january 31st. Is this a rejection letter?
