Hi guys! I do research at Drew University and am currently in the process of applying to medical school there. Drew is my primary choice but I just heard some news last week that deeply saddened me.

In the newspaper (LA Times) last Thursday (I believe) there was an article that stated Drew was on the verge of losing it's accredidation for all of its' residency programs at King County. They had a reviewer come by about 2 weeks ago to overlook the problem again and although the directors of the program thought it went well, the reviewer found many flaws in its' program including overworked and under-skilled residents. They also stated that residents of all the programs on an average were doing things that were not part of their "job description" and that the program had many flaws that needed to be fixed immediately. This is the second time they were reviewed unfavorably...one more time and they lose accredidation for ALL of Drew's residency programs. This means even LA County that provides King Drew with 13 million dollars annually might also cut off financial ties with the hospital. Basically, the program is falling apart and they are fighting an uphill battle. Some residents now have to find new residency programs by next summer and it seems the program is in such a chaotic state right now that the university cannot even help the residents find a new position.

With all this being said, the medical education program at Drew could probably be jeopardized next. Working there and speaking with the staff and students at Drew, I am now very cautious about going to medical school there. Though we are a part of Drew and want the best for the program, I am not sure what will come of it and DO NOT want to jeopardize my medical education. I worked so hard to get to this point...I don't want to risk anything!

Anyway, I just thought you should know what's going on over here at Drew. I will be meeting with Dr. Chancellor Daniel this Tuesday...he is the director of the family medicine residency program at Drew and he is also on the admissions committee for the medical school. He's a very busy man but I was able to get a meeting with him this week to voice my concerns and see what he says. I'll keep you all updated! 🙁

That's too bad for Drew. I'm glad I didn't apply to it. Any Drew students who would like to comment (a.k.a Deuce MD)?

This is how I understand how it affects the drew/ucla students, the LCME is the accrediting body for schools in the U.S. that confer the MD degree. Drew Univ. is not accredited by them, UCLA is. It is UCLA that grants us our degree, we pay our tuition threw UCLA, and we a registered threw them w/a ucla ID#. We haven been assured by the deans of drew and ucla that our education won't be compromised. If Drew looses its residencies we'll probably do our rotations w/attendings instead of w/residents. And the other options is doing our rotations at other ucla affilated hospitals. As how this affects drew univ. it is sad, because drew serves an area that is in great need, and it is the drew/ucla students who passionately want to serve this need. I don't want to speculate anymore but will keep you guys updated if you have questions.

Thanks for the info Deuce 007... at least it's reassuring now to know that UCLA does have our back and the education program is not in jeopardy at this point.

However, are y'all worried about the quality of your rotations at King County? With things chaotic and fallin' apart, do you worry that you might NOT get out all that you expected to from the Drew/UCLA program?

Wow, thanks for bringing this up, guys. Good thing too that Drew is so late this year--it'll give us more time to find out @ the situation & to decide whether or not to do their 2ndary.

Yeah, Luwi, the way it sounds, I'm sure some chaos during the clinical years @ Drew would be inevitable & that is not a comforting thought considering that period is already unstable in itself w/ the whole residency application process. Hmmmm. 😕

Drew is my last secondary, I haven't sent it in yet. Well, mainly because I don't have any money left but should I really consider this fact in deciding whether or not to send?

Hi DoctorKevin...

Maybe you not having any money left to send in the Drew secondary is a sign NOT to. I've already sent mine prior to hearing that things are falling apart over at the Drew medical school, but NOW I wish I would've not sent it in and just saved $50.

I just feel like I've worked way too hard to choose a medical program that I knew was disorganized and unstable. I want my medical education to be stable and since I personally feel like your rotations are critical to your performance ultimately in residency, I want my rotations to be at a stable clinical facility where I can gain the most out of my experience and my money.

I have always wanted to go to Drew for medical school and have been doing research here at Drew for 2 years because I loved their mission. But at this point, I have decided NOT to go there...I think I owe myself better.

This is just my opinion. Things at Drew can turn out fine...but what if they don't? Would you want to even take that chance?

I wish you the best of luck and hope you get into your number one choice!
