Drexel IHS 2013-2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got accepted to Drexel IHS as well, but if you read the other thread about IHS program it doesn't have the reviews in the world... So likely I won't attend.

I haven't made the final decision yet but anyone has pros and cons about this program?

I did read the reviews, but I'm hoping to talk to people who have actually completed the program. Most reviews are from people that haven't stuck with it, not sure how valid the negative comments are.

Additionally, I spoke to the director and there is now an MCAT prep course built in.

I don't know, I only applied to Drexel and don't want to wait another year to apply to another program. I contemplated taking courses at local university, but it's expensive, the classes aren't guaranteed and there's no master's at the end.

I would really like to talk to people who have completed the program. Did you apply to other post-bacc's?

How hard is it to get in? I've just applied to M.S biological science program ,,, hope to get in!

I am not sure how competitive the MS Bio Program is, I applied for the DPMS program and was offered a seat in the IHS program.

GOOD LUCK!!

Thanks cocoxaurus!

I'm an international student, so I'm not eligible for certificate programs and must apply for a degree (2 years!) ... IHS sounds interesting, congratulations and good luck!

Do you think it's hard to get in at Drexel in general?! I haven't heard of this school before,,, I mean I only knew that Drexel exists when I was looking for SMP at the GPA enhancement thread!!

Not the same reputation as other schools that offer SMPs,, or maybe I'm the one who haven't heard of it but it's a well known school!

I interviewed today. They meet every Wednesday to make the decisions. Good luck!

Thank you!

And, I think it depends on the program you apply to. Drexel is really good about placing you where they think you will succeed. Have you been invited to interview with Drexel? Did you apply to other schools?

I applied to M.S. Biological Sciences. My application should be completed by today,,, I emailed them 4days ago to check out what's missing but no reply!!
So, no I haven't been invited as my application was completed today with my last letter of recommendation!

I did applied to BU MAMS but got rejected ,,, I applied to BU HEM ans was accepted (I sent my deposit in case I didn't make it somewhere else) .. I applied to Tufts MBS (application completed today as well,, b/c of the same one lazy recommender!),, I'm not expecting an offer at Tufts as I see some people are already wait-listed,,, so they won't give me an offer by now!
So,, it's either Drexel or I'm going to BU HEM!

I really prefer Drexel as it's a SMP and will be more favorable to med school over BU HEM program, although BU is my number 1 school and I've always dreamed of going to BU as an undergrad but didn't make it!

For those of you you interested in IHS, I know there are limited reviews on the program, but I spoke to someone about her experience in the program and gathered the following info:

-She was bumped to IHS from DPMS.

-There are several classes offered and students rank the classes they want to take, counselors review the schedule and place you where they think you will do well. The majority of the time you get what you request and if you don't they give you an explanation.

-Classes are difficult, but you can definitely do well if you study A LOT!

- School was helpful in getting to medical school. (The girl went through the second year as well & recommends taking physiology right before the MCAT) She also felt that the program helped with her GPA and she will be starting Medical school this coming Fall.

-If you decide to take anatomy it is DIFFICULT, be warned.

-There are problems with Administration, I asked for specifics and she said they are not really available for help/guidance.

-Her overall rating: she really enjoyed the program and felt that it helped get her to med school.

-Drexel does put mixers together to help students get acquainted. She lived in East Falls and took the shuttle to Campus. If you are planning on living in the city, car isn't needed.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will do my best to get the info to you.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful

Questions:

Do you advise doing both years? and how possible is it to get into med school after the first year?

How likely are you to get accepted after an interview?

That all depends on you. If you feel that you will be a competitive applicant after the first year then you can apply directly to medical school, otherwise you can stay for the second year (if you get through the first year with a 3.0 GPA).
The goal of the program is to help make you a more competitive applicant and for you to do well in these classes. You can always asses at the end of the first year.

As for acceptance to the program, that's a really tough question and one I can't answer. I received my acceptance email about 2 weeks after the interview. Stay positive and keep us posted!

I got the call that I was a better fit for the MSP program!! Good luck everyone! And thanks for the information cocoxaurus!

I'll be attending IHS. was disappointed that I wasn't accepted to MSP, apparently due to my science GPA. During a brief discussion with the girl on the phone she said that IHS has identical ckasses with the exception of the Advanced Physics and Advanced Chemistry courses and a later MCAT prep start date. Apparwntly the program is suited for those who need less help with GPA and more with MCAT so unfortunately I was demoted to a program that sounds like it does less of both with the implied focus of steering students away from medical school which is very discouraging. Looking forward to learning more about this program before I make my decision.

I felt the same way, but don't be discouraged. I was disappointed at first, but I like the classes the IHS program offers. My problem is also a low GPA and while their mission statement is also to expose students to other fields of medicine, it doesn't mean that you should give up on medical school. I have personally spoken to 2 people who have been accepted to medical school after completing the program. It might take longer to get to med school, since fixing your GPA won't be easy, but it is possible. I have looked at other programs, but I don't meet the GPA requirements to apply and I would rather be working towards a master's as opposed to taking classes a la carte and paying about 2 grand for each class.

I have decided on doing the program. I already submitted my deposit and will moving to Philadelphia next month. I'm not here to advocate for IHS since I haven't completed the program, but I also didn't apply to other programs and I think it's the best option for me at this point.

Good luck and keep us posted on your decision.

ِAlmost the same here!
I had my interview yesterday and the invitation said that my interview is for IHS program but I applied for MSP program. The girl that interviewed me said the same exact thing about the difference between IHS and MSP and if you choose to do the 2 year program they both have the same second year where you take first year medical classes!

The weird thing is that I got an email an hour after my interview saying the following:

"Thank you for your application to the MSP Program. Your file is nearly complete. Before we can finish our review, we will need you to submit a corrected BCPM (Math Science GPA) form. Please download and print the form, and follow the directions provided online to fill it out. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us. You may fax your form in once it is complete."

I have already sent my GPA form but I'm not sure what they mean by corrected form! I emailed them but still waiting for a reply! I'm not sure what was wrong with the one submitted but I guess maybe I shouldn't include the courses that I have taken at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon where I started college (didn't receive a degree as I have transferred) ... I read through the instructions again and this is the only thing that I think could be wrong as it says I should include courses taken in the U.S and its territories or Canada! I thought my school is an American school so I included the courses in the BCPM GPA! Any thoughts on what's wrong?!!

Moreover,, do you include statistic classes as well?!!

Hopefully they get back to you soon. Did you submit your application online? There is a separate BCPM sheet that you have to submit that is not part of the online application. I went through ALL the classes that I have ever taken and checked with AMCAS, I was a psych major, so I was able to add some of the clasess on to my BCPM sheet.

And you do add Statistics, I added mine and I took statistics for psychology, but that was fine.

hope this helped!

I was also accepted to Tulanes One Year Masters program in Microbiology and although it give me a masters degree after one year, I am not concerned with earning a masters. This program looks like it has more medical school related classes to at least better prepare myself for med school. Another appealing element of the program is that ability to take a full course load of first year medical school classes in the second year. Not sure why they don't just call this program IMS (it doesnt allow you to take first year Medical school nutrition and first year medical school immunology)? Another appealing part is the Princeton Review course built into the second semester. Thats worth at least $1000. So where are you living? Whats your rent? or rent budget if you havent found a spot yet?

Yes, I feel like IHS combines all of the programs. It helps with MCAT and we get to take grad level science courses, awesome!

I was planning to live near Hahnemann (where classes will be held) or at least within a 2 mile radius.... everything is so expensive though. I found a 2 bedroom, 1 ba for 1200, but reluctant to take it because I'm afraid I won't find a roommate and be stuck with the rent. The apartment is in the rittenhouse sq area, it's not very big, but it's a pretty good deal. I also have a small dog and feel like people might not be too happy with a dog in the house, I don't know.
So far I've been searching for studios and my budget is somewhere around 850. I'm also debating on whether I will be taking my car, I might be doing a cross country roadtrip from California.

How about you? Have you started your search? when do you plan on moving?

yes it was an online application & I did sent the form by mail. I added statistics now and re-sent the form. Hope it will be accepted, still no reply! The girl that interviewed me said they meet every Wednesday, so I'll probably hear back soon!

And since you have already considered moving to Philly, is it true that Philly is a dangerous city full of crimes? or just certain parts are?! Is there a place that you think people shouldn't live at?

Well, philadelphia like other big cities has crime, but there are really nice areas. I lived in East falls for 2 months at the beginning of this year and I loved it, it is a little far from school, but there is a free shuttle from the medical school in east falls to Hahnemann. I'm planning on living in the city for school though.
I think that you should definitely stay away from Camden. I'm not too familiar with too much of the city so I can't comment on how safe it is. I'm having someone that lives in Philly now check out apartments for me, I haven't found anything yet but I'm hopeful that something will pop up.

I would suggest looking at a map of Philadelphia and looking up crime rates of potential places in the city/East falls that you are thinking of moving to.

Thank you cocoxaurus!

I will be looking more intensively once I hear back from them,,, I'm just trying to get an idea of living in Philly for now, once I get in, serious work will begin!

Hey, I was accepted to this program too. at the moment, I am 80% percent sure that I will be attending this program. I have a couple of days to finalize my decision. I read a few bad reviews about this program also before, but which program got perfect reviews right? There are also good reviews too. thanks cocoxaurus and others for the info that you have presented on this thread. It makes me feel more confident about this program. Do you know if there is any facebook group around? maybe we should make one and try to group everyone together. looking forward to meeting you guys. classes is starting in a month!!! if anyone else got anymore extra info about this program. please let us know!

Hello Everyone,
If you will be attending IHS this coming Fall and would like to add to the facebook group you can do so here:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/523743407699499/members/

I'm hoping the group will help us all connect academically and socially. We can use the forum for questions, announcements, class info, study groups, roommate stuff... etc.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Still deciding between this IHS program and Barry University's Master of Biomedical Science program, if anybody has more info about the IHS program please share!! Thanks ...I'll be coming from California!

to Omiles21:
two of my choices were IHS and Barry too, I chose IHS because they have more of the courses I want. I think Drexel is generally a more known school than Barry. I spoke to my cousin's fiance who went to Barry and told me it wasn't a good school and it was geared more towards getting in NSU and Barry. She eventually went to Barry PA school and didn't get into med school. I want a wider scope of schools to apply to. Even though I prefer doing a 1 yr masters, I don't want to be restricted to Florida. of course, both of these programs seem to have their share of good and bad reviews, i think Drexel is the better of the two. Hope my opinion helps!

Hello all,
I am a little nervous about these reviews I see online, and it seems others are too, but I am trying to be optimistic! I just mailed in my deposit today, so I am almost positive that I am staying with this program. Thanks cocoxaurus for making a fb thread. I am looking for a reasonably priced place to live nearby, preferably walking distance or easy to commute. Graduate housing is just too overpriced for what it is. I have looked around and there are a few places that I like. Anyone willing to be a potential roommate, please message me!
