anyone else?

i applied last month. Could you go over when you sent your app and selective they were. any info would be great

I actually was accepted last year but deferred to do research for a top tier orthopaedic surgery dept
I believe that I sent in my app about the same time as you, I got accepted in May (I think)
I'm not sure how selective they are... I know that I had one bad year in college and have excelled since then
I have numerous publications, 4.5 years of research experience and I am an EMT
The admissions people were extremely nice... just be yourself during the interview and be sincere
I believe they wanted no less than 9 per section on the mcat and I think they would care more about this than a couple tenths of gpa since the whole point is to increase gpa (school) credentials, not test scores... but then again, thats just my opinion

At least I know there is one other person decided on this program...
Are you living in Stiles Hall or elsewhere?
Where are you coming from?

Not to hijack this thread but:
Angela - when did you apply? I'm going to apply this year and was wondering what the usual response time is for the admissions committee.
Thanks!

I'm from Iowa, graduated from the U of Iowa...

Hey all. I just posted in the other IMS class of 2009 thread. I interviewed last week and got accepted yesterday. Leaning towards Stiles, but not sure yet.

dont sweat it milkman. I applied last week of march/first week of april, so it took 3-4 weeks to get a call to schedule a phone interview. good luck

I see from the website that the program is open to pre-dents. Does anyone know if they accept dat instead of mcat?

what the stats of those accepted were. I had 3.23 GPA, 26 MCAT which I just retook. I think I have pretty good LOR and a year of awesome volunteer/work experience. I hate playing the waiting game and am trying to find some peace of mind.

Thanks
Jon-Monkey 😀

Yes, they do. Usually an 18 or better is the score that they look for.

hey guys, i was accepted to here and was wondering why this program over BU, EVMS, NYMC accelerated, etc..?

Hey everyone. How long did it take you guys to hear back from Drexel after the interview. I had mine last week and I still haven't heard anything yet. Also congrats to everyone that has gotten in so far.

hey if you are female and interested in rooming in stiles with one to two people let me know. just post message me. i wanted to figure this out before the summer hits. thanks
🙂

Hey do any of you guys know the exact start date for the IMS program and other orientations dates that we have to attend because I was planning on retaking my mcat on August 5th.

I answered you in the MSP thread, but the orientation starts on August 4th. It's mandatory and they say that you cannot be in the program if you cannot attend the orientation (which lasts for a few days). That sucks!

Thanks for the info. Is that the actually date for this year, someone else said August 5th? Maybe I can just try and take it on the 7th or 15th of August after the program starts.

I am 99.9% positive the start date is August 4th.

Sure. Do they offer it on weekends? That might be the best option.

I wish there was a weekend one but its only weekdays. I think the 15th one is on a Friday, so thats probably the best. I am sure missing one day of class won't screw me up too bad since the lectures are recorded. Don't a lot of the students just watch the lectures at home, or at least the med students.

i know i posted this before, but can someone tell me why they chose IMS over other programs? it would be a great help to me, thanks

Orientation starts August 4, its a monday... last year it was the 5th

Personally, I chose this program over georgetown because at my state school drexel has a better reputation...
no georgetown smp student has ever been taken at our school but 4 out of the last 6 student body presidents of our med school actually did the IMS at drexel and this allowed them to have a huge head start over the rest of their class

I guess I just talked to our admissions dept... they said they knew of other schools that had the exact opposite view between the programs

Our admissions dept told me that they have never accepted any student from georgetowns smp but normally take 1 student ever year or two from drexel... but they also said that they knew of other schools that had the opposite view on the programs. so, it wouldn't hurt to talk to the admissions committee of your first choice school...

LoL so I called up drexel today and they told me that they don't have a exact date set for the orientation yet or when classes are going to start. So that was kind of dumb but all she knew was that its probably going to be the first week of August. Also like some of you guys have already said the orientation is mandatory. 🙄

The acceptance email said that orientation will be august 5th and first day of classes will be august 11th. I hope this email is right.

Thanks Bro. Ya I don't know I am getting 3 different answers from 3 different sources. August 5th from the people that got expected this year. August 4th from the people in the program. And the real source Drexel had no idea what the exact date was going to be. Hopefully I can get this resolved by the next tuesday because I think thats the last day I can change my mcat date.

Drji-
I am sorry you're getting such conflicting information. I have a feeling you probably talked to someone who doesn't have all of their information correct (unfortunately, there are people like that everywhere). I will go in tomorrow and ask head administrator of the program. I will also ask why there is some conflicting information between the acceptance email and what others have been told. I will get it all cleared up and let you know tomorrow.

Wow😍 thanks for being so helpful Mori. Also since you are going to be asking them can you ask them how long the orientation is going to be, that way I can just pick a date to take the test.

Hi i have a 3.2 gpa with a 34Q on the mcat i was just wondering what would be chances of being accepted into Drexel and what are teh chances of acceptance into med school in CA afterwards.

So I just received the acceptance email from Drexel 🙂. Like a lot of the other accepted folks were saying, the email says that orientation will start on August 5th and classes begin on the 11th. But I think I will wait for Mori to respond because they could have just made an error with acceptance the email.

However on the other hand I am kind worried about actually getting in to med school after hearing about how they over enrolled last year. So they will probably be a lot more careful in their acceptances this year, meaning less likely to get in to drexel.🙁

Yup. The orientation starts on August 5th. I actually forgot to ask how long the orientation runs, but for us it was 2.5 days. (Our orientation started on the 6th and we started classes the afternoon of the 8th.)

Congrats on your acceptance!

Its ok, I will try and call them and find out the exact details on Monday. But thank you for all the help, I know you must be busy with classes and still you have been very nice in trying to help me with information about Drexel. Thanks once again. 🙂

hi all, i just saw noticed this thread, i've been talking about ims on the other thread "drexel v georgetown" (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=124679)

i'm an ims student about to finish my first year. i'm also living in stiles hall. so i'm happy to answer any questions you guys might have about the first year, post a reply or PM me, whatever.

just a heads up about orientation- definitely mandatory. my roommate in stiles was deferred acceptance into ims until someone didn't show up for orientation in august- so he got that spot. it ran about 3 days for us (wed-fri), and we had class the monday after.

So I guess I will just post my question in here.

You wouldn't happen to have any tips for the future IMS folks coming to the program this year would you? In terms of if we should buy textbooks, areas to live, how to best study, good places to study, and maybe even which professor are most helpful/on adcom/ or write good letters. I think info about these kinds of things would really help out all of the people coming into the program.

So do you thinking living in stiles is probably the best option. The 3 day orientation sucks, I was hoping it was only going to be 2 days that way I could take my mcat on 7th but that does not seem like a possibility now. What are they going to talk about for 3 days?🙁

haha, just spent the last 15 min answering your question on the other thread. so people who are looking for the answers, go there.

stiles is a popular option, a solid chunk of ims live there, but there are plenty of places that are also close and maybe even cheaper. i guess do some real estate or craig's list research. unfortunately, orientation is a boring waste of time. you'll be hearing from a lot of boring people, like the safety woman talking about safety, the librarian talking about the library, playing lame icebreaker games, etc. the only potentially useful part is when they bring in a few second years (mms) who will address your questions about ims. which is what i'm basically doing for you now 🙂 . so yea, unfortunately all 2 or 3 days are pretty full, and you have to be there. your call on the mcat, i don't know if your issue is a scheduling conflict or a desire to study the last few days before it, but i'm sure they'd understand you missing some of orientation if you had signed up a while ago, and if it's the latter, i would hope for your sake that you don't plan to do the majority of your studying in the last few days. good luck though!

hope that helps.

Ya as for the mcat it was scheduling problem because I am going to be out of the country for a volunteer thing and I am coming back in July. So August is the best time for me to take it.

Haha sorry I thought you wanted to respond in this thread.

i'll respond to questions in the thread in which they were asked. good luck on the mcat- if i don't get into ducom, i'll be retaking it in august too.

I'm a current IMS student, so I'm going to answer some questions that I saw....

I see from the website that the program is open to pre-dents. Does anyone know if they accept dat instead of mcat?

They do take the DAT, but good luck getting in. This year they accepted one pre-dent student. Generally, they reject most of them. Just fyi.

DUCOM accepted 14 students out of the IMS program (mind you, there are over a hundred in the program). Next year, in order to qualify for the interview you must have a 3.0 in the program and at least a 30 MCAT. If you have less than a 30, I wouldn't advise you to attend the program before you get your score up. I have the inkling that they will be accepting fewer next year, too. The numbers have been decreasing for some time.

So I guess I will just post my question in here.

To answer your questions, in order:
Textbooks: wait for a while to buy them. The biochemistry one is particularly worthless and I spent $150 on it. If you'd like a good paperweight, I have one to sell you...🙄 But seriously, even if they say it's "required" it's probably not. Definitely get Lippencott's for biochem (Farrier wrote the darn thing, and she's course director), both the microanatomy texts, the Physiology text plus the BRS phys book, the nutrition books, and the neuro texts (and possibly maybe the immuno one).

Where to live: students live all over. I would hate to have a long commute since I spend all my time in NCB but, hey, whatever floats your boat. Stiles is popular. So is the Packard (it's next door). They're about the same price.

Places to study: the library? If you can avoid the really annoying nursing students who talk all the time. Some people go to Starbucks, the public library, or find other places (empty classrooms and labs). You aren't allowed to go to Queen Lane, so it's not an option. You can study on the main campus if you want.

How to study: however you can. Seriously. I've got 1,200 pages of biochem notes, you study it however the hell you can. Whiteboards are popular to use, as are the online resources and videodisks. People make study groups, as well. There are also tutors available.

Profs: Ferrier is awesome. The rest, well...they're smart but maybe leave something to be desired. You probably won't ever meet any of them, though, except the ones that run labs. You probably won't be getting a letter from any of them, unless you find a way to meet them and hang out. Swaney can be particularly vindictive, so consider yourself warned. Never put something in an email to him you don't want forwarded to the rest of the class. Yeah, I'm serious about that.

And orientation: some of it is really helpful, and the rest of it is mind-numbingly boring. Be prepared to sit through a lecture on the value of evaluating curricula. And Dr. Soslau will spend a good chunk of time telling everybody to ship up or be prepared to fail. Fun times...

PM me if you have questions.

I don't know if anyone has the answer to this, but I'm wondering, of the 100 or so students that are accepted into IMS, approximately how many drop out before the program ends and/or don't apply to medical school?

it was a lot this year. around 20-25 at least

I am just finishing up MSP (07-08) and have a few items for sale. I lived in Stiles Alumni Hall and am selling the following:

First, a bed, King Koil: Fairhaven Euro, purchased new from Sleepy's in August 2007. I have had the mattress a little over 9 months and am selling it for $450. (Originally, I bought it for $600). It is in excellent condition and includes a frame, and as well as 3 sets of risers (from ikea) which work wonderfully to provide under the bed storage.

Second, a dresser and night stand from Target. I paid $250 and $150 for them respectively, but will sell the dresser for $200 and the nightstand for $100. These items are in excellent condition, and are shabby chic brand. The links to the items on Target's website are below.

dresser: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html...XYM&rh=&page=1

night stand: http://www.target.com/Simply-Shabby-...e=1&rh=&page=1

Finally, I have a desk purchased from ikea for $35. I am selling it for $20.

If you are interested in buying the whole package (a complete room including a mattress and frame, dresser, nightstand and desk) I will sell it all for $650.

I realize that many of you will not be arriving until August, but for anyone in the Philadelphia area, this furniture is available June 1st but must be picked up no later than June 3rd. Let me know if you are interested.

For anyone that has been accepted, did you receive anything in the mail about your acceptance? Because I have only received an email and was wondering if there is going to be anything coming in the mail.

I haven't received anything in the mail either.
@ starrynight- Is the 30 MCAT score for an interview for this upcoming class, or the following year. Also, are you assuming this or do you know for sure?

someone make a new facebook group for the incoming class so we get to know each other. I'll be in drexel this spring. also I need someone to room with.

facebook group created: search Drexel Interdepartmental Medical Science (IMS) Program: 2008 - 2009

I couldn't find the group.

Right now I'm looking at a group "Drexel Interdepartmental Medical Science (IMS) Program: 2007-2008/2009". Is that different from the one you are talking about?
