It's for the class starting this fall. DUCOM wanted to change it this year, mid-year, but I guess they decided that would be unfair to current students.

The director of the program announced this to the students.
 
Future IMSers,

I am a recent graduate of Drexel's MSP program and I am coming back for the IMS year to finish up my Masters. I am looking for two roommates (male or female) from the IMS program to live with me in my house in Manayunk, PA. Manayunk is about a 10-15 minute drive on route 76 towards Center City.

You can walk to the train station that is in town in like 5-10 minutes or, if you have a car, you can buy a parking pass at the Medical School in East Falls (which is about a 10 minute drive from my house) and park your car in their lot or you can find free parking on the street in front of the medical school. Then you can take the free shuttle that goes back and forth from the Medical School to Hahnemann Hospital and the New College Building (NCB).

All in all I wake up and drive to the medical school (10 min drive), park, and take the shuttle to NCB (about 20 min ride)...and then spend the day in NCB studying and come home at night. Don't have to deal with city traffic = less stress.

I live in the largest room in the house...room size determines the amount of monthly rent you pay. I pay 600 and the two available rooms are 550 and 500 a month without utilities. We have one bathroom, nice spacy living room, a large wrap around couch in the living room, living room table and chairs, AC unit in living room, washer, drier, dishwasher, wooden side deck, grill, one parking space (you can find parking around Manayunk successfully near the house). Kitchen floors are tile, living room floor is wood. We have a basement for storage space if you need it.

Manayunk is a fun town to live in with a nice downtown area with lots of bars and restuarants...so when you do have some free time you can enjoy it in the downtown area.

I chose to live in Manayunk because I spend enough time in Center City to begin with for school. I prefer coming home to a quiet house rather then dealing with the hustle and bustle of city life.

I am looking for serious roommates who won't bail after a semester of IMS (since students do drop out of the program). If you want to live with other IMS students in a house that's a little outside of the city then please drop me a personal message. Stiles is nice but its more like a dorm on steroids. Also you are not guaranteed to live with students from only IMS...since there are students from all different programs living in the building. I know i def would prefer to be living around students who are going through the same classes and tough times...plus living with two other students in the same program would be great because you can instantly refer to each other if you are stumped on certain parts of the material.

I did the MSP program this year and had very little problems traveling to and from school (even during the winter)...the shuttle service is very good.

Now.. Do we have to wait to submit the AMCAS application until the orientation? It says in the orientation memo that we will be registering the classes on the day of the orientation.. I was hoping to submit the AMCAS application earlier than that..
Does anyone know what to do? Can we just register it by ourselves?

You don't have to actually be registered for the classes to write them on your AMCAS. It is a good idea to submit the AMCAS before starting the IMS program if you feel like you are competitive enough of an applicant.

The important thing is you state that no transcript is required from Drexel when you fill out your primary. This is how it should look after you complete the section:
Drexel University - Medical Science Programs - Medical Science Programs
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Dates Attended: August 2008 to May 2009
Advisor Release: Permitted
Degree: No Degree Expected
Major: No Major
Minor: No Minor
Transcript Required: No
Not doing this will require a transcript to be sent, something you will not have until November.
Registration: I forget the specifics, but they register everyone in one shot on the same day. It is just for efficiency. Your acceptance package will contain the course numbers.

The Q&A with MMS is one of the more insightful parts of orientation. Dr. Soslau's speech is honest. He's seen it all and will tell you exactly where you stand. When listening to that speech listen with an open mind, don't think to yourself "he's not talking about me" and ignore that 200 people sitting in an auditorium even with A/C gets uncomfortable fast. There is no dress code, so make sure to wear a T-shirt and shorts.

This is not true.

The score for a guaranteed interview is still a 27, and this will stay the same for the Fall 2008 IMS class. DUCOM was talking about changing it, but it did not happen. There is now a rumor going around that it will be a 30 for this upcoming year, but that is not true. The requirement is a 27 with a 9 in each section. You can have 1 section with an 8, but no sections can be less than an 8 and you cannot have more than 1 section with an 8.

I am a current IMS student, and I am also an admissions counselor, so we deal with this issue on a daily basis. I hope this clears things up for everyone.

Huh. That's news to me. Of course, it's thoroughly unsurprising, given how disorganized Drexel is, and how little information actually gets passed onto the students. 🙄 Apparently only the admissions counselors are privy to the truth.

Hey, do you get the stats on the real number accepted to med school? Or do they lie to you too about that?

Nah they don't lie, but we don't know the exact numbers for this year.
 
i called up the ims office and they said it is still a 27 for the interview. so i guess the 30 is either rumor or for the class of '10

I was curious as to what type of questions they asked during the interview?
 
they ask the same questions you would expect in a med school interview

I just got accepted to the program yesterday and it looks like I will be attending there...I was pleasantly surprised about how efficient their entire process was, I think it took a total of 3 weeks for everything to happen and i heard from them the very next day after my phone interview. very efficient!

I interviewed last Friday and just heard today that I am placed "on hold." I hate all these waitlists!!!!!

Here are some of the harder (I thought) questions they asked:

1. What keeps you balanced?
2. Why do you want to be a dr?
3. What's the most important healthcare issue you think we are facing today?
4. If your peers were to describe you in three words, what would they say?

The interview was given by a recent graduate of the ims program, so it was kinda nice to be able to ask questions....but kind of intimidating that the interview was being graded by a peer. It was also very read-off-the-list-of-questions.

Congrats to everyone else who is in....and good luck to the rest of you!
 
I didn't receive a formal letter, but at one.drexel.edu I have the amount of aid the school/govt have decided to give me...
 
I wanted to add drexel's courses into my AMCAS, where can i find a list of the course names and numbers for the IMS program?

For those of you who have had interviews, how long did the admissions committee take to get back to you after your application was complete?

My app has been complete for two or three weeks now (I applied quite late) and I haven't heard anything. Any advice?

I went to the financial aid office on Wed and spoke with Lois, the assistant director. She told me that letters would go out later this month, but you should be able to see what you were awarded on your drexel.one account. Knowing Drexel, probably won't see the letter until school is about to start, if at all.

Last year the fin aid letters weren't out until after classes started. It could be a wait, just fyi.

There are 100 students in the IMS program, plus the 20 or so from the MBS program who take the same classes.

Last year, ~50 (I think it was 48) got A's/B's, 27 qualified for the interview (>27 MCAT), and 12 were accepted. So Drexel took 12 out of 120+ of their own students. I wouldn't bank on going to DUCOM, my bet's that next year they'll take even fewer. And doing well is no guarantee: I know people who were rejected with 3.8+ GPAs. They did take the one guy with a 4.0.

I don't believe the 60-85% they like to quote so often, given my experience in the program and how I've seen most of my friends get passed over by every medical school. If you look at the facebook group, which was 55 of the students, 9 were accepted into med schools (some of which are DOs: keep in mind Drexel doesn't like to differentiate between MD and DO in these stats). I would say over a two year period, of the students who do get in, most of them will be attending DO schools. I'm going to be a bitch for a moment and say this is not why I'm in the program: my stats were fine for DO schools, but I wanted to be able to get into my own state's MD school, hence I went to Drexel.

They like to keep the real stats under lock and key, so all I can do is talk to people and do some creative estimation. Good luck ever getting a straight answer out of the IMS office.
 
I'll be attending the program this fall. I wanna live in a 2 or 3-bedroom place in Stiles, preferably with fellow IMS students. PM me if you're interested. I'm a 22M from NY.
 
Hey guys,

I'm a former Drexel COM student, and my friend, also a Drexel COM student is looking for someone to take over the lease on her apartment. Its an amazing FULLY furnished apartment, all you would need to do is bring yourself, your clothes, and (if you want) a roommate to split the rent ($1309). Her lease goes until next February and at that point if you wanted to renew the lease you could do so. It is only a few blocks away from Drexel's New College Building (where all of the IMS, MSP, DPMS, and PMED classes are taken) and there is a free shuttle that goes from the apartment to the school every half hour, but it's close enough to walk if you would rather walk instead. A lot of people have been interested in her place, but she said she will give it to whoever passes the credit check and puts a deposit down first. Anybody have any clue if they posted the textbook list this year? All I can find is the handbook from last year which lists the books from last year
 
anyone have any recommendation on places to live for this fall 2008 besides Stiles. They only have 3 bedrooms apartment left. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment near campus as much as possible for the IMS program. Thanks!
