Drexel IMS Program...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Honestly, most IMS students are happy to get in anywhere - you get an MD no matter where you go as long as you do the work. I'll spare you my tyraid against the rampant SDN eletist view on this subject...

Captain,

Thanks for the info. I understand that an MD is an MD, etc.--I was asking out of curiousty. I completely agree about the elitist attitudes (quite funny actually---"43S MCAT, 3.97 GPA-->what schools should I apply to?" ---or--- the "Hopkins vs. Harvard" threads).

The whole "tier thing" I read on SDN--on a "safety schools" thread.

Thanks again for your reply.

How did the phone interviews go? Was the interviewer cordial or did you feel like it was strictly question, answer and all business? How would you guys rate your interview experience?

Thanks

I hear ya...I get a kick out of it too. Just a word of caution though...A lot of the so called "Safety Schools" get up 10,000 apps just because so many people view them as just that - a safety school. One of the best things you can do when applying to such schools is to express as much interest in the school as possible - this will set you apart from the masses of students that apply and never follow up with the school because, again, to them it's just a safety school. Call admissions offices and set up tours of the school, write letters of intent...whatever you gotta do to make them keep pulling your file.

CaptainZero,

Do you know if there is some sort of alumni contact list for the Medical Science Programs at Drexel (MCP Hanheman)? Just curious--it seems like it would be interesting to contact former students and see where they are at (in schools, residencies, internships) and how the programs have helped them, etc.

The phone interview was laid back. The usual questions were asked: Why do you want to be a doctor and how did you become interested in medicine? How would this program help you?

The interviewer asked a lot of questions (they were asked in a "get to know you" way).

Overall, the phone interview was very easy and you should have no worries about it--just be yourself and be honest.

Not that I know of...you're right though, that would be a good thing for them to setup.

It was my goal to set up a user friendly alumni directory while I was at Drexel MSP/IMS and it wasn't well received. The basic problem was finding someone to maintain it.

Only one person has been accepted to UPenn in the past couple of years (from what I know) and there was a student three years ago who was accepted to Dartmoth.

Believe me, after a two year post-Bacc program you will be willing to go anywhere.

I would add Tulane to that list as they were nice to me and have been to IMSers in the past (the Dean of Students is a nice guy and he was born, raised, and trained in Philly-UPenn actually).

There are more schools that are friendly, but you can figure that out by looking at the list on the wall next to the IMS office.

Cheers,
WISC-ite

Anyone:

Are most IMS grads accepted to MD or DO school? I read somewhere that most IMS students were getting into DO schools as opposed to MD schools.

CaptainZero: I am not sure if you know this, but where are most of the "top" IMS students in your class going to school (any UPenn, etc.)?

I am just curious because it seems like most IMSers are getting into third-tier schools and I haven't heard any of the UCs or IVYs mentioned. I guess what I am asking is: any of the grads going to "big name" schools?

drumming 😀

I graduated from the program, MMS, in 2002. The year before me there were two people accepted to both UC Irvine and UC Davis. I don't why the program administrators don't update and boast about these success stories. My experience with the IMS and MMS and MBS students are that they mostly get into US allopathic schools.

Thanks for the UC acceptances--it seems like they would want to add these to their placement list. I don't think the website is updated that often as the application deadlines for last year are still up on their site.

Oh yeah, how should we dress for orientation week? It seems like the luncheon will be business casual. Do all the programs do orientation together?

Drumming I'm starting MSP orientation this week so it seems it will be all the programs there. Hope to see you man. You had good advice

Dress comfortable...shorts & T-shirts...even for the luncheon (unless things have changed since last year - which I highly doubt).

I wish I knew that before today!!!! For those that saw me, I was the ***** that decided to overdress in a dress shirt and pants (i was wearing a tie but i threw that in my bag).

good question. So far so good. I met drumming and we are off and running. We figured the week long orientation could have been done in two hours. We would end up going for about an hour or two each day for a week? I am in MSP and have met IMS'ers as well. They already had/have a quiz and seem to be getting hit hard early. I will let you know more as time continues.

Good. There wasn't a lot of intermingling between MSP&IMS last year until later in the year...so it's good to see that that's not the case this year. IMS will continue to get hit hard - but honestly frequent tests/quizzes are great because they force you to stay on top of the material, which will make studying for exams a lot easier. Just be thankful that IMS doesn't have to take any of the big finals.
