For students enrolled in the Drexel College of Medicine Interdepartmental Medical Science (IMS) Program for the 2009-2010 school year.

Description of the IMS Program:
The IMS curriculum requires a full-time commitment to rigorous coursework. Students need to enter the program with strong academic credentials. Six major medical school courses are taken simultaneously with the College of Medicine first-year class. These include Medical Biochemistry, Cell Biology & Microanatomy, Medical Physiology, Medical Nutrition, Medical Immunology, and Medical Neuroscience. The medical school lectures are simulcast to the Health Sciences Campus (located in Center City, Philadelphia) from the Drexel University College of Medicine campus (located in East Falls, Philadelphia).

Important Dates:
Orientation: Monday, August 3, 2009
Classes Begin: Monday, August 10, 2009

does anyone know if you can find out what books to buy for the upcoming year already?

I would call their office or talk to Joy Henderson. She was pretty helpful whenever I had questions.

ya i asked her she said that dir of admissions will send that info out later in teh summer i was just hoping maybe a student would know already so i can take care of buying them since im going to be away a few weeks before classes start

Pro tip from a former IMSer: don't buy any books until you get the module notes. What are module notes, you ask? A hefty set of photocopies with a set of pages that corresponds to each and every lecture.

The only exceptions I can think of are the two histology guides you'll use for Microanatomy and the Medicine and Society book (Ethincal Issues in Modern Medicine, Eds Steinbock et al) . That being said, Micro has a great set of online slides and if you know all of those cold, you'll ace the practical.

If the lecturer sucks or the material isn't clear, check out the recommended text in the library and read the appropriate section. If you find that you're learning everything much better from the book, buy the book but chances are it'll just be filled with extraneous information that won't be tested on and you'll be wasting your time with minutiae when you should really be spending your time reading and re-reading (and re-reading, and re-reading...) your module notes.

Personally, I found the following texts helpful for a few classes but many of my smarter friends didn't crack them once.

Lippincott's Biochemistry (co-authored by Dr. Denise Ferrier, one of the biochem professors)
BRS for Biochemistry
Wheater's Functional Histology
Histology: A Text and Atlas by Ross

Good luck!

Oh and also, the nutrition textbook is absolutely required if you plan on taking that course.

As a future MMSer, I will be selling my books either now or through the list-serve.

Just to add to that list, I had a few friends tell me that they found BRS Physiology really helpful too. Luckily the BRS books are nice and cheap.

Also, I was really glad I bought the Neuroscience Nolte book and the Neuro atlas, but Neuro doesn't even start until March, so you don't need to worry about that for now.

And, finally, from what I remember, the first month is mostly Biochem and Micro, so you definitely have time to order some of the actually required books, like Nutrition and Medicine and Society, before those classes start. And like TyrKinase said, they are all on reserve in the library and almost always available, except maybe the day before an exam or the day that a Med & Soc paper is due.

Recently accepted to this program, but still waiting for other acceptances. I have about two weeks to decide.

Anyway, my interviewer said that cost of living in Philly is pretty expensive. One bedroom apartments usually run ~$1500. Is there any truth to this?

Does anyone have any input on the Stiles Alumni Hall?

Love living in the dorms? Want to do it again? Congratulations, you're in luck because that's exactly what you're getting!

Pros: it's close to campus.

Cons: It's not cheap, the rooms are small and infestations of one sort or another aren't rare (this year it was bed bugs).

guess i'll be spraying down the room with lysol before i move in!..ne one hear back from the lady at Stiles hall yet? I sent her a couple emails..i shud prolly call 😛

As an update, I declined the offer for a spot in the 2009-2010 IMS class.

Good luck, all.

where are you going instead?

Nevermind, I saw that you got into RFUMS. Congrats on that. I'm sure you will do well there. I had a friend do that program and she is now an M2 as of this coming fall there. She loved it.

Thanks, gujuDoc. Again, thanks for all your help and advice. Please do update me with where you will be going this fall. Best wishes.

So I got the phone interview scheduled for tomorrow.

Congrats!!! As you probably already know, the interview is very straight forward and nothing you should be too worried about. It was more of a nice chat. Imagine just sharing with a friend about your career goals.

Good luck!

So does anyone know from the office, or from anyone from previous years, what the orientation schedule is like? The main thing I want to know is the hours for each day (especially for the last day, because I bought Phillies vs Marlins baseball tickets for 7:30 PM and I want to make sure I can go to the game). I look forward to meeting all you guys out in Phily!

If they keep orientation the same as previous years, it's much too long. I believe it lasted for four days last year but the good news is that it ends at a pretty reasonable time (between 2pm and 4pm) everyday. You should be able to attend the Phillies game without any problem.

Thanks TyrKinase. I've heard about the pointless, long orientation and I'm not really looking forward to it. But knowing that I'll be out of there early enough for the game is good news for sure.

So I didn't get into Drexel IMS. I had the phone interview and they didn't accept me. They gave some msg about how competitive it is. I don't know what that means. They said that there are people you can talk to for feedback but no one is even picking up at the IMS office.

The IMS office isn't the most responsive place so I'd give them another try tomorrow when they open (9AM or so). Any alternative plans for 2009-2010?

Does anyone know the orientation schedule? It hasn't been posted online yet and I'm curious how many days it's going to be. I'm trying to head out of town on Friday for a little while and wanted to know if I could actually do it.

Looking forward to meeting everyone in Philly!

So I received a call today informing me of a phone interview for the drexel IMS program. I'm wondering how long it took before you all were informed if you were accepted or not. I'm a little worried because classes start soon and I would still have to look for a place. Well I guess I should handle the interview first.

hey gujuDoc, sorry to hear about ur rejection. Seemed like your stellar MCAT shud've been enough of a promise that you can handle medical school courses.

Is ne one else applying to med schools this year, as well? I heard its good to have one year of the IMS course work done and then apply following summer, but I don't wanna take another year

Hey thanks for the link guju, the interview almost followed it exactly. It was much more relaxed than i thought it would be. I got an acceptance yesterday so I will be heading out to philly soon, it is pretty short notice for me. Sorry to hear drexel didn't go so well for you but at least you have other options.

hey, i just got my acceptance to the IMS program today. now i'm panicking because there's so little time for me to move out from california. what are you doing about housing? i called stiles in hopes for a 1 bedroom but it seems those are all taken!

Hey Morgan, I was freaked out too because of the short notice. Im moving out of california as well. I submitted my application to stiles on Friday, I faxed it to make it quicker and they said i could call up the cashier to charge my credit card so i wouldnt have to wait to send in my deposit. I asked for a 2 bedroom because I heard the 1 bedrooms are taken and right now i just want a place to live and not worry about finding a place in the city with such little time.

slamindesi - I'm currently applying this year as well. I just put all the IMS course work in my primary and im hoping to update schools I'm applying to with my grades as I get them at the IMS program. Let me know your status or anything you think I should know. I'd prefer not to take an extra year also!

I just received my acceptance to the Drexel IMS and now need to find housing. I want to live on campus in Stiles Hall. Is anyone else looking for a roommate that is in the same IMS program? thanks

Does anyone know if they have openings for Spring semester ??

Another seat opened up for IMS. I will be going to EVMS SMP. Goodluck guys!
