Just wondering how everyone else was doing in the application process...

My application was complete as of about two weeks ago and received a voicemail today to schedule my phone interview.
I am of course anxious and now want to shake out some nervous energy with others going through the process! 😳

hey I sent out an app about 2 weeks ago but have not heard anything. When did you get your app sent to them.

I sent in my app around the end of January. I called about once to twice a week since then to check on the status (mainly to make sure they received all the materials).
Definitely keep up with your application. They don't seem to mind calls checking up on everything. Especially from what I've read on these forums from other applications cycles, it seems imperative to stay on top of your status with Drexel!

I applied to MSP too.
I just got an email to do a phone interview.

I don't know if I want MSP program.
It seems to me after MSP you can't apply to med school yet.
You have to take another year of IMS.
That counts as two years.

Can anybody correct me if I'm wrong?

Thanks.

Godzilla,

I am currently in the the MSP Program. A requirement of the MSP Program is that you take the MCAT at the end of the year (April or May). Since you will be taking it then, you will be applying for med school entry for the following year, meaning that you would have a lag year between application and matriculation. Because of that year, Drexel offers an additional year(IMS) for you to get a Masters in Biological Sciences if you meet certain requirements, but the second year is not required. If you only complete the MSP program you will receive a certificate. So whether you return for the IMS year or not, you basically have a lag year anyway. Anyone can PM me with additional questions.

Just finished my phone interview! They said I should hear something in about 2-3 weeks.

Good luck to everyone else applying!:luck::luck::luck:

Has anyone else who has applied to the program heard anything? If anyone had questions about the interview I would be more than willing to help!

Also, to any current MSPers, is it true that your class size is about 40? And do you have an estimate of how many of those students (if they perform well) get into the IMS program? Is there a limited amount of seats given to MSPers who perform well for the IMS program or do you automatically get into IMS if you do well?

Can you apply for MSP at Drexel if you had no science courses in undergrad. i am a finance major looking at drexel for doing a postbacc.

Unfortunately you need to have already taken your pre-med requirements:
http://www.drexelmed.edu/PostBaccPr...ePreparatoryMSPProgram/tabid/669/Default.aspx

You want to look for specifically Post-Baccalaureate programs that are geared towards career changing applicant such as yourself. The AAMC has a list of all of these programs:

http://services.aamc.org/postbac/

Hope this helps; Good luck to you!

Are any of you applying to drexel Pathway to medical school program DPMS?

please elaborate at will

Just mailed out my application today for MSP & IMS. Phew...here goes nothing!

To the Guest that just received a phone interview, I was wondering what type of questions they asked you? What are your GPA and MCAT scores like? (You don't have to answer that...🙂) Sending my application soon and just freaking out a little....

Thanks! And congrats on making it that far in the process!!! Also, do you know if they have had a lot of applications for the MSP so far???

Hey dchris, I actually had my interview a couple days ago and would be glad to help!

It lasted about 25-30 min. the questions encompassed a lot of your run of the mill "interview questions" such as:
(of course) the Why do you want to be a doctor?
If you've already applied to medical school they will ask what you think the weakness in your application is?
What are your strengths/weaknesses?
How do you think your peers perceive you?
How do you relax/find balance in your life with work or school work?

It felt like it went so fast for me, (probably b/c I was a little nervous!) but I think that covers what you should expect. You will be asked if you have questions for the interviewer so definitely be prepared to ask some yourself. I hope that helps, and good luck to you too!

Hey dchris,
In regards to how many applications they've received I have no idea. But I got this little blurb from their website:

http://www.drexelmed.edu/PostBaccPreProfessionalEd/ApplicationsResources/FAQs/tabid/679/Default.aspx
"How competitive is the application process?

Over the past five years, the program has averaged more than 600 applications for 100 seats in IMS and 40 seats in MSP. For both programs, the average GPA is 3.2. The average MCAT for the IMS program is above a 27 and the average MCAT for the MSP program is in the low 20's. In addition, the program evaluates the applicant's exposure to health care as well as community and volunteer activities."

Zoonotic,

Thank you so much for your prompt response and the well wishes! I saw that blurb too! But with their deadline in July, you would kind of expect that many applications!

Good luck to you too! It's nice that you'll know of your acceptance in just a few weeks!

🙂🙂🙂

Would anyone who has gotten in or interviewed mind sharing their GPA/MCAT stats??

Has Anyone done the MSP program that was pre-dental? I asked them about their program and they said that it is almost entirely geared toward pre-medical students and that's about all they said?

Have any pre-dents done this program?

Any info would help!

Thanks!

I've just gotten the official "you've been put on hold status" e-mail 🙁, even though I've already done an interview

Anyone else get this e-mail or gotten an acceptance yet?

Does anyone know where the MSP classes are located? Are they at the Hahnemann campus or the Drexel Campus?

I am waiting to hear back from them as well. FYI "favored" I was interviewed with a 1310 GRE and 3.2 GPA (I haven't taken the MCAT yet).

I wouldn't read too much into that "hold" status, but how long did it take you to hear back from them for the interview after your app was completed?

good luck!

what happens if we take the MCAT the summer before the program then do we suddenly not qualify for the program?

Thanks!

I got accepted to the MSP program about 1 month ago, but I'm waiting to hear back from other programs. Is there anyone out there who is currently finishing either the MSP or IMS program that can provide a testimonial? Thanks! 🙂

Did you apply to med school before or after starting the IMS program?

I am still in the program now. I submitted my AMCAS in August, but my suggestion is to submit it (and as many of your secondaries as possible) before you start school.

mori6478, this has been asked in another thread but no one has responded. Do you know what the schedule is like for the MSP including the MCAT review classes. A number of us were wondering this, but have been unable to find any concrete info on it. The MSP website is really vague about it. Thanks.

Hey mori thanks for all the helpful information that you have given about the Drexel IMS program. I was just wondering if you stayed for the second year or if you applied during your first year. Also do you suggest applying the first year or waiting for year for someone with a 3.3-3.4 gpa. Thanks.

I applied during the IMS year (my first, and only, year).

Well, the program doesn't improve your undergrad GPA, so you'd still have the same GPA regardless of when you apply. The thing that's better about waiting until the second year is that you can apply earlier with more grades. If you get into the program, you can make an appointment with one of the administrators, and he/she will tell you whether or not you should wait to apply when taking into account your whole application.

Thanks for the reply. I will make sure that I talk with one of the administrators before I apply. As for the program, how hard did you have study compared to undergraduate. I am planning on studying as much as I possibly can because I just ended up procrastinating all through ug and I don't think my gpa really reflects my true abilities. Good luck in medical school.

how hard did you have study compared to undergraduate?

It is hard to even compare how much more you have to study. As I said in my information posting, the first half of the first semester, I didn't do well because I didn't know how to study. I started using the tutoring service, and I learned the most efficient way to study for myself, and I immediately saw a vast improvement. My advice: do not wait that long. If you do not do as well as you want to on the very first test, get tutoring.

I know most people say that medical school classes are all about memorization is there some truth to that because I usually procrastinate about memorizing things 😳. I am more of a conceptual learner. Do you have any study tips that may help me and others that are going to be going into the program. Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hey do any of you guys know the exact start date for the IMS program and other orientations dates that we have to attend because I was planning on retaking my mcat on August 5th.

i'm not sure when the exact start day is for class, but the orientation for the IMS is August 5th. I would call the office and talk to them about this and see what they think of your situation. If IMS is like the MSP, they will start class the same day as orientation (which is what's happening with me for MSP in August...)

Thank you for the information. I was hoping it would be on like the 6th or 7th of August. That sucks I guess I will just call them and see. I was going to be out of the country so I didn't want to take it in July.

The IMS program's orientation starts on August the 4th. It is 100% mandatory (they will most likely not allow you to attend the program if you don't attend the orientation). It lasts a few days before the classes start. Bummer... 🙁

Its for a couple of days? Dang I was hoping that maybe I could just the mcat in Philadelphia if I have to. Maybe if I only miss a couple hours of orientation it won't be so bad. 😳

Hey All,

I am a MSP Graduate, as of yesterday 🙂, and just logged onto SDN and saw that there was a group for the studnets who would be starting this next year. Feel free to ask me any questions that you may have - I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible...I remember being in your shoes last year. Also, I have some of the textbooks that you will be needing next year and am willing to sell them to someone cheaper than I bought them for. If you're interested, let me know and we can arrange something. I'm leaving Philly for a job and would rather not ship them to another state if I could sell them to someone now.

Just let me know!

Hi MSP hopefuls,

I am a MSP graduate and I have some books you need for sale.
If you are interested, hopefully we can arrange something out.
I am also willing to answer any questions you may have about the program.

I have a question to both MSP graduates that just posted. Would you mind sharing how you did in the program and what your plans for the next year (or two) consist of?? Also, how did your MCAT score increase compare to when you last took it? Thanks for sharing whatever you feel necessary...I'm accepted into the program, but I'm trying to get a feel how prepared it will make me to re-apply.

Do the best you can in all classes. Pharmacology and Anatomy are the two classes you have to study really hard to do well. The others are not that bad. MCAT should be your priority in the MSP year. Aim for at least 30. I have not taken the real MCAT but my mock MCAT scores (AAMC online) have improved. Cannot speak for others in the program. 2nd year is optional. Still debating about coming back for the 2nd year. Personally, the most important thing I accomplished in the MSP year was that I learned the skills and knowledge I needed to do well on the MCAT. This was something I was not able to do on my own.

Hey all,

Just wanted to let you know that if you ask questions - I will reply to you via a PM, because I feel I can give you more info that way. However if you want me to reply to the group as a whole, just write that in your message - just be aware that the answers won't be as personalized.

I am just finishing up MSP (07-08) and have a few items for sale. I lived in Stiles Alumni Hall and am selling the following:

First, a bed, King Koil: Fairhaven Euro, purchased new from Sleepy's in August 2007. I have had the mattress a little over 9 months and am selling it for $450. (Originally, I bought it for $600). It is in excellent condition and includes a frame, and as well as 3 sets of risers (from ikea) which work wonderfully to provide under the bed storage.

Second, a dresser and night stand from Target. I paid $250 and $150 for them respectively, but will sell the dresser for $200 and the nightstand for $100. These items are in excellent condition, and are shabby chic brand. The links to the items on Target's website are below.

dresser: http://www.target.com/gp/detail.htm...50321&frombrowse=1&asin=B000MT5XYM&rh=&page=1

night stand: http://www.target.com/Simply-Shabby...ie=UTF8&node=13750321&frombrowse=1&rh=&page=1

Finally, I have a desk purchased from ikea for $35. I am selling it for $20.

If you are interested in buying the whole package (a complete room including a mattress and frame, dresser, nightstand and desk) I will sell it all for $650.

I realize that many of you will not be arriving until August, but for anyone in the Philadelphia area, this furniture is available June 1st but must be picked up no later than June 3rd. Let me know if you are interested and good luck this next year!

Hi MSP graduates!
I just got accepted into the MSP program and i had a few questions.
for those who took the MCATs, how well did you do?
How was your MSP experience? pros and cons?
Did you have time to do any community service work (volunteer) while in the program.
Can one hold a part-time job while in the program?
thank you.
Greatly appreciate it if you can elaborate on all these questions.
thanks
Brownybebs

MSP graduates!
For those selling books, what books are you selling and how much
I am interested in buying some books.Let me know
thanks

I'm an MSP graduate from the past year and this program isn't all that they sell it out to be.

If you think this program will improve your MCATS, think again and DO NOT go here. Because with time-consuming classes (taught by a few bad profs) and MCAT classes that are taught by former students you won't get what you hope you would get with the money you invest in this program.

If you NEED a GPA improvement only then you should consider this program.

Don't worry, there are other options if you feel that this program is your only hope for survival.

Check out this thread. Official Drexel MSP 08-09. Former students have given their opinions here.
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=511971&highlight=drexel+msp+2008

You can also go to facebook and check out what former and current students have to say about this program by joining their MSP or IMS groups.

Hey, I'm a former MSPer, and my friend, also a former MSPer is looking for someone to take over the lease on her apartment. Its an amazing FULLY furnished apartment, all you would need to do is bring yourself, your clothes, and (if you want) a roommate to split the rent. Her lease goes until next February and at that point if you wanted to renew the lease you could do so. It is only a few blocks away from Drexel's New College Building (where all of the IMS, MSP, DPMS, and PMED classes are taken) and there is a free shuttle that goes from the apartment to the school every half hour, but it's close enough to walk if you would rather walk instead. A lot of people have been interested in her place, but she said she will give it to whoever passes the credit check and puts a deposit down first. If you are interested contact Katty, [email protected] for more details!

what can you tell me about the msp program?
is it worthwhile? i've heard it's not good, that the courses are hard and that they just want your money? i think i might be going there so i am worried
