I won't say anything about USN&WR rankings or NIH funding. These are comments from my gut from two of the places I interviewed.
UNC: Seemed a little sterile. During my interview, I ran into a former classmate who matched there last year. He looked a bit frantic during morning rounds - even unable to say hello to me. No medical students, interns or second year residents were at morning report - it was mainly chief residents and attendings. Where I am from, we really embrace morning report for the teaching and learning - it really is all about the interns - not so much at UNC. Maybe they have Intern report but I don't recall them mentioning it. Lastly, for all of the ranting that the PD gave about not contacting applicants about the match, there has been quite a bit of post-interview contact from them. My gut feeling is not great, but I know others who have liked it. I loved Carrboro - what a great little grass roots town!
MUSC: Friendly program with good camraderie among residents. PD is down to earth and approachable. Morning report was led by chiefs but interns and medical students presented the cases. Lots of pathology as there is a culture of faith healing prevelant in the Gullah communities on many of the barrier islands. Good GI fellowship. Charleston is just about the coolest town south of NYC. I would rank it higher if I wasn't looking to leave the South.
