I'm hoping someone from NC can help me out. I have a friend who lives very close to the RDU airport, and has offered to let me stay with her/borrow a car when I fly down for my Wake Forest interview. This is great, and much cheaper than a hotel, but I was wondering how long it will take to get there in the morning?? Is most of the traffic going east into Durham/Raleigh, so if I am going west, it will not be too bad? What time should I leave to be there at 10? Or should I just pay the $$ and stay closer to Wake?

Thanks for your help!

stay closer to wake. you're going to have to drive through greensboro to get from raleigh to winston salem, and that's just not a) pretty or b) predictable. interviews are stressful; don't make them worse by being late b/c I-40 was shut down for the eighty-millionth time due to an unfortunate combination of construction and bad driving. it's not a bad drive at certain times of day, but it's a real bitch at other times.

I agree. You can make it to Raleigh in about an hour and half if there is NO traffic. However, in the morning, I-40 is usually busy in durham/chapel hill and greensboro. I would try to stay in winston the night before just so you aren't rushed the morning of the interview.

I drove from raleigh and stayed in winston-salem

I also did this and it worked out great and cheaper than flying into Greensboro

I live in raleigh and spent the night at a hotel in winston-salem. It will probably take you about 2-2.5 hours in the morning to get there because there is construction on I-40 and almost always slowdowns through RTP. There's also construction on Business 40 around winston-salem so you should expect delays there too. I recommend staying in Winston, I stayed at the Comfort Inn right across from the med center for 75 bucks.

Thanks for your advice everyone!

It will take you two hours minimum to reach Winston-Salem from Raleigh.

i stayed at the hawthorne inn. they had a special rate for wake forest interviewees ....$55. they also have a shuttle that takes you to wake and back to the hotel so it was very convinient.

I live right by RDU. I drove to Winston-Salem and it took me an hour and a half, no problem. I left in the morning, gave myself an extra hour and waited for about an hour when I got there. I took 540 past the airport to 40W to 40W business by W-S and followed there directions. Don't waste money on a hotel. I even got home in time for dinner! Traffic was not an issue except coming home on 540 where there was a tractor trailer accident - a random event.

yeah, too bad you can't predict those "random events" that always cause the traffic backups.

Two hours minimum? How slow do yall drive? It takes 1:35 going 10 mph over the speed limit. So even WITH accidents and traffic, 2 hours max. Trust me, I am from Raleigh and went to Wake. It has NEVER taken me longer than 2:00. Give yourself 2:30 to be on the safe said, grab a coffee in town, relax, and kick the crap out of the interview.
