okay this is not really medically related but its pre-med related. because i have no where else to turn for the answer to this question and mah parents are semi-******ed so i have turned to you fine people 🙂. btw the answers on google isn't informative enough for me to live on.

my license just expired last week, and i am now 21 years old. so what happends if i get caught by the police while driving with mah expired lincense in the state of NY? like legal punishment wise. in addition, will it ever stop me from being admitted into a medical school (i know i am being a little paranoia here but this is crucial to me)?

IANAL but it is a misdemeanor in some states. That doesn't mean it is in NY, or that a cop won't just ask you to get it renewed, but I wouldn't take the risk until you got more info...

edit: I doubt you'd get kicked out of school if you'd already been accepted, but why risk having to check that box on your app.

About 6 years ago I got stopped for speeding, with an expired (by 3 weeks) license and it ended up being very expensive. I believe I paid like a $500 fine, plus like $200 for the speeding. Then I got a surcharge of $100 every yea for 3 years. Like $1000 in total 😡.

This n00b Cleavername is such a n00b. We should all point and laugh at how n00bish he is. What a n00000000000000b lawlz.

so its sole punishment is $$$? not like revoking your lincense?

I realised about a week ago that my license expired during the summer. I guess I got the notice pre-summer and threw it aside during finals and put it in the "do this later" pile of papers. Some liquor store notified me when I was trying to buy a 4lokos. I don't normally drink but I wanted to see what the big deal was about before it got banned. Anyways, I found the notification and renewed it online.

Op: just go to the DMV and renew it. The fee will be the same. Here in CA its $35.

Someone with an expired license doesn't technically have a license. It's just a laminated card as far as the state is concerned. You can't revoke something that someone doesn't have. But if you mean, is someone prevented from getting/renewing their license after driving without one, I would think that that wouldn't be the case. Fines and jail time would be all that apply. Getting your license revoked would seem to be something that would happen after doing something wrong while driving with a license, such as driving intoxicated and reckless driving.

Why are people even taking this n00b seriously. He started a ****ing thread asking if he could still get into med school if he drove with an expired lincese (sic). Let's just point and laugh at the dumb n00b instead of feeding the troll.

I only got a fine for it, but you can even get jail time for this. Also the officer that stopped me let me go. Now I realize that he could have impounded my car. I got extremely lucky on that one I guess.

At least in CA, you can renew your license over the phone. They just send you a new card in the mail a few weeks later.

(I only know this because yesterday my boss spent about 10 minutes on the phone shouting the phrase "driver's license" over and over to some automated DMV phone system, until an actual person picked up and handled her request in 30 seconds.)

reading comprehension fail.

What is a lincese?

Quit being a b!tch and get your license fixed.

You must have a valid NYS driver license or non-driver photo ID card that is eligible to be renewed:

  • A driver license/ID can be renewed up to one year before its expiration date.
  • An expired driver license/ID can be renewed if it has been expired for less than two years. However, you can receive a traffic ticket if you drive with an expired license.
  • Early or late renewal does not affect the expiration date of your new document or the fees.
If you use an expired driver license to drive and you get a traffic ticket, you will receive fines and penalties.

  • 60 days or less after the expiration date: a fine of $25 to $40, plus state and local surcharges.
  • More than 60 days after the expiration date: a fine of $75 to $300, plus state and local surcharges.

.

I have a feeling this will solve your problem:

1) Think of where you first got the license in question.
2) Go to that building.

C'mon, bro!

Also, here in PA at least, the camera card you get in the mail is good for 2 months after the issue date of the renewal card and serves as a temporary license.

and getting the new license literally is a ten minute process at the dmv...after which they physically print you one off.

In NYS (being an ex NYer) I know you get a temporary at the dmv and then they send you the new one in the mail

now that is useful, thank you very much.

okay i think you severely underestimate the wait time at any DMV that is close to me. the line goes out the door past the point of like just 9 am.

Renew the licence or don't drive. Take a few rides until you can get it fixed.

I know in Florida if you get caught driving on an expired or suspended licence you go to jail, 9 times out of 10. You could end up paying alot of money if you don't fix that licence.

Here (in Vancouver, BC), if it's your first offence you get a $276 and your car impounded for 7 days. You get a $500 ticket and up to 6 months in jail if you're caught driving without a valid license again.

yeesh! in MB it's something like a $75 ticket each time, but after multiple offences they can impound at their discretion. to the op: if it's expired, why not just get it renewed? or bus in the meantime rather than risk it?

okay okay i just renewed it online. they didn't let me print any temporary ones tho. what should i do now.

they did give me a confirmation code tho.

 CA sucks. I renewed my damn license in the beginning of October and it still hasn't gotten to my house. Been expired for a month now, no one has cared.

You go down to the DMV and stand in that big line, just like everyone else has to do every few years. Just get it done already.

Nope.

It IS done already. He ordered it online, which California's DMV allows you to do. California is currently changing their license's appearance and security measures. As such, it is a 4-6 week waiting period for anyone requesting a new license right now. If the OP goes to the DMV and stands in the big line he's going to just waste his time and get laughed at.

To the OP, if you are concerned about driving, print out the receipt that they e-mailed you that showed you have paid for the renewal and has a confirmation number. Just because you do not have a current license on you does not mean if the cop runs your license it will show up as driving on an expired license. This will at least prove to him that you have made an effort.

Yes, you need to get your license renewed and I have backed taxes. Who wants to help me on those?

No offense dude, but if you can't figure this stuff out on your own, then well, I don't need to say that timeless SDN line... I mean seriously, is it the end of the world to not drive for a week or two? I have somehow managed to get by for a couple years doing so...

Idk about other states but in CA you don't even need to go to the DMV to renew. Just do it online, takes like 10 minutes and it'll come to you in the mail.
