DrMaryC-tell me about doing rotations....

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, Dr Mary must have stepped out tonight!
I can answer that for you. Ideally KCUMB would like to have all the students do their rotations in KC, in fact, that is their goal one day. You have to keep in mind that KCUMB shares the entire KC metro area with 2 other medical schools and there are strict contracts with every medical facility in the area. If I choose to do an elective in KC for example, I need to go through KCUMB rather than set it up on my own through the hospital. This is to avoid stepping on so-called "political toes". Whereas if I choose to do an elective outside of KC, I can set it up on my own, in fact, I am expected to set it up on my own.
Personally, I chose KCUMB due to the fact I could go out of state. Hope this answers some of your questions.

Thanks DrSmiles. I should have asked anyone studying at KCUMB. I'm in Omaha so KCUMB is on my list. I have a family so I was wondering about having to leave KC.

Let me ask this...

Could I chose to do a rotation as far away as Omaha, which is in Nebraska?

Hola...Muchos Gracias DrSmiles....que pasa?

tllajd--

For third year rotations you put your top 3 locations down. There is a match process. Roughly half the class stays in KC. If you have a family in KC you can put a plea in to stay, in case you don't match. Some people did this.

Cleveland was my first choice. I have my sights on the Cleveland Clinic for a future residency/career.

On the flip side. I don't like being split up from my classmates whom I spent the first two years with. I have a few classmates up in Ohio here, but our class literally went to the four winds. Fla, NY, Denver, Detroit, Texas, NJ to name a few (Ohio too).

When applying to DO school I knew that we could do rotations almost wherever we wanted. Yet I didn't know that I would feel this way about leaving KC after 2nd year.

KCUMB/UHS is an awesome school. I wish I could still be around to learn from the profs who taught me during 1st and 2nd year.

Good luck! Shoot more questions anytime.
🙂

At this time there are no rotation sites in Omaha.

I'm very clueless on this rotation thing.

Does a hospital first have to want to be in consideration for clerkship? Do they put their name in or do we as students ask to go to that hospital? I assume each rotation is only for about 12 weeks at a time?

I just really know very little about it all.

It's OK. I think the Illuminati ultimately has control over the whole situation.

Seriously:
1. Students pick the hospital/rotation site.
2. The hospital/rotation sites are not involved in any 'decisions'.
3. It is a computerized match system run by the KCUMB clinical rotaion office.
4. There is a whole list of rotation sites.
5. Students examine this list and formulate an idea of where they'd like to rotate and why.
6. In the fall of 2nd year the students put down their top 3 preferences for rotation sites.
7. Each rotation site accepts a certain number of students. It could be two or it could be ten. Depends on the site.
8. School runs the computer program. Tries to 'match' all students' 1st choices with open and available slots. This is done in a random fashion, supposedly.
9. Students who don't get matched to their 1st choice get run thru the computer program again, to try to match to their 2nd choice. Again, if the spots are filled, they do it again and you get your 3rd choice.
10. Kansas City, in itself is ONE rotation site. So if you want to stay in KC you put it down as your 1st choice.
11. You will not be stationed at one hospital. You may do family med at a clinic, ob/gyn at one hospital, surgery at another. All will be in the KC area. Some who are in KC still have to drive a really long way to their clinic where they are rotating for the month.
12. All rotations are 4 weeks long except family med and internal med and I think ER....someone correct me if I'm wrong.
13. I like lists, so that's why I wrote all this up this way. It helps me remember everything.
14. Keep the q's coming! 🙂

Thank you for all the great info..

I wondered about rotations in Omaha. We already have two other medical schools here.

If you are in Cleveland are you responsible for finding your own room and board? I assume yes.

Tell me, if you can...do they do small town rotations? And I hate to be a pain, but do they do anything in Nebraska or maybe even Council Bluffs?

Actually, how do you tell where a school can do rotations? Am I missing some information on the internet?

You are responsible for finding your own room and board wherever you go in med school.

Yes, there are small town rotations. I do not know if there are rotations in Neb/Council Bluffs. Call KCUMB and ask for the OCCE office. Tell them you are a prospective student and that you'd like this info. I have a nagging feeling that they might not tell you~maybe something about the fact that the site locations can change. I had a friend in my class who wanted Omaha, but there was no site.

Overall, like I said, you may not be able to get a definitive list of rotation sites. Because affiliations can change. You can rest assured though that there are enough slots for ROUGHLY half the class in KC.

If you want to see a list of the current KCUMB core sites for rotations, go to the KCUMB web page, click on the ACADEMICS tab (at the top along the border), then click on OCCE tab, click on 2004 clerkships (for some reason it isn't listed under 2005), then click on FORMS AND LISTS.
Scroll all the way down to CORE SITES FOR CLASS OF 2005.
They don't have 2006 listed yet, but it is pretty much the same.

You can try that link and see if it works too.
