hi everyone,

I'm taking microbiology lab and was wondering how if dropping it and having a W would be worse than getting a B+ in the course. I have tests every week along with midterms and practicals every few weeks. I feel like it would be better to spend the time studying for the MCAT or shadowing. I know a B+ isn't a bad grade but the class takes time away from other courses that are more credits. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you.

How many credits is the class?
What are your current GPA and BCPM GPA?
What year of school are you in?
Do you have other Ws?

Do you have several W's? 1 W won't hurt your app.

It's a 2 credit course that goes from 6pm-930. I spend around 10 hours a week studying for this class. I have been doing well enough so far. The issue I'm anticipating is burn out and it affecting my other grades, especially those that are pre reqs. I plan on taking Anatomy&Physiology in the winter, which is a pre req and I don't want to feel drained when I start since it's a shorter class.

Currently around a 3.7 in both. I graduated with a 4.0 in my last semester and returned for outstanding courses.

I have no prior Ws but I am worried that this will be a really bad mark against me and go against the upward trend I demonstrated when I graduated.

I grant you that burnout protection is a legit reason. One W won't hurt (and won't be a "really bad mark against you"), but I hate to see you use it considering the small impact a B+ will have on your GPA, when worse issues may arise in a future term when you really, really need to protect your GPA against a truly mediocre (or worse) grade, due to illness, or whatever.

If you drop the class, how many credit hours will you still be taking?

Okay. I'm very nervous about how a downward trend would look as well. I am not doing bad in the class at all. But this class isn't necessary and I'd rather be ready to taken on more important classes.

I would be taking 9 credit hours. One benefit is that I could use the time I've spent studying for this one class to shadow and volunteer.

A W won't be looked at as a downward grade trend (if that's what you meant).

By my calculations 2 credit of B+(3.3) and 9 credits of A (4.0) would give you a GPA for the term of 3.87, which hardly represents a downward grade trend either.

Okay. Thank you! I think it's just a midterm freak out.
