Dropped a class?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You need to relax. If I understood correctly, your GPA is currently a 3.68. That's fine. Make sure you take all the premed prerequisites and a finance major. You can be pre-med and still major in finance. Those hours are averages and yes they are competitive. Keep your GPA up and get a good score on the MCAT. Are you a citizen of the US?

Thank you for your response. I am not a citizen, but I am a US permanent resident (green card).

What grade did you get in your dropped class?

Don’t take 20 credits if you’re shooting for straight As.

You don’t need to major in premed or biology.

Your research doesn’t have to be medically related.

I’ve dropped a class and am having a successful cycle so far (in terms of getting interviews). I think as long as it is not a pattern then you are fine.

I do think university is a lot harder than community college though, and I don’t think you need 500+ clinical and non-clinical volunteering hours to be competitive. I personally shot for 100+ but had a long term commitment, but I am just an applicant.

Not all US Universities are the same. Not all community colleges are the same. I have seen community colleges that are harder than some 4-year universities. Not even same courses at the same universities are the same. Some professors are easier than others. But sometimes you do not have alternatives. Most community colleges do not offer upper level science courses like physics, Microbiology, Immunology, Histology, Cell Bio, genetics, Neuroscience or anatomy and physiology.

Don't worry about about your GPA. It looks good. Keep it up. Do not overload yourself with lots of credits especially when you will start your upper sciences. Make sure you set out adequate time for volunteering and for yourself.

As far as your English, you will have to take MCAT which is most important test in your pre-med life. Make sure you set adequate amount of time for studying. This is where you reading and comprehension will be tested for sure.

Do not worry about 1-2 W's on your transcript. Do not make it a habit though.

The math class your are talking about is probably Calculus. I do not think it is required for most schools, though Statistics and any algebra course might satisfy the requirement. Check the requirements of the specific MD/DO schools you are interested in.

About volunteering hours. It varies. Do what you enjoy on a regular basis for a good period of time. Having direct patient care experience is a huge plus. Helping people that are in need is a huge plus. Getting involved and getting your sleeves rolled up is a plus. Try to shadow for 50+ hours and include PCP shadowing if you can.

When you start your prerequisites, develop relationships and make sure to get LOR's.

I agree with the 100+ hours

I'm also an applicant who's been having a good cycle so far and only had that much.
