i was wondering if i should drop one of my math classes because i am totally unprepared for it and i have no idea what is going on. the only problem is that i would receive a "W" on my transcript, my advisor said that the W would be better than a D or F and that i should do it. i am a freshman and i wasn't sure of the difficulty of the course.

will this W hurt me? should i take the D or F instead? i just wanted to hear input from people who have been accepted to medical schools.

thanks!

Drop it. The D or F will hurt worse. Adcoms will look at your overall GPA as well as GPA trend. An F or D will will definitely hurt that.

Thanks a lot, I will think more about it first. Everyone else on my floor keeps bothering me about this, so I am trying to ignore them. They truly don't know how bad my math abilities are, I am more concerned about doing well in a course and improving on the way up.

Think about it. If you get a D, you'll need 2 A's to pull it up to 3.0. It's not worth. Drop it. You'll have to explain why you have a W or D or F anyway. Why make it worse ?

Take the W. Make sure that you have all your deadlines and things straight though, because you can't withdraw from a class after a certain date... and then the decision between a W and a D/F will have been decided for you! Good luck!

Are you certain that you will get a D or F? Maybe you can pull off a C? You're only a freshman, so I wouldn't be so worried about a C or a W so early in your career. The thing is to NOT make it a habit. However, if you're positive that you're definitely getting a D or F, I would highly encourage you to take a W. It'll be a huge load off your shoulders and you can work harder for the A's in your other classes. D's and F's really hurt your overall GPA and they also look horrible. A W just looks a wee-bit bad. But you can always explain yourself at interviews.

Good luck.

For what it's worth, I had a W (in accounting 101) and no one has ever asked me about it, and I just got into NYCOM. Additionally, Math courses aren't calculated into your gpa, so they might ask you about it during interviews, but it wont hurt your numbers.

He is probably about 4 weeks into the school year and states he is lost. He states he is taking one other math class and is possibly taking some science classes since he is premed. A grade of a C might be too much to hope for. Drop that Bad Boy!

In terms of severity:

F > WF > D > W > C > B > A
