Hi All,

I'm a little worried about dropping my biochem class. If I do drop it, I'd definitely take it again though - I'm a junior and I'll be applying this summer so I'd be taking it my senior year. I have a 3.82 GPA, 3.77 sGPA, 30MCAT score.

Right now, I'm at a C/C+ in biochem and I'd be more than happy with a B- (yup - we have + and - at our univ). But I'm also realistic - to get that B-, I'd have to make high B's and low A's on the next 2 tests and I'm really worried that won't happen. I don't want to risk it.

I think I could make the B if I took the class again. If I did, my strategy would have to change: I'd have to study every day after class, take less hours, and not be as involved as I am on camus right now.

I know biochem 2 isn't even necessary or recommended for med schools - which kind of makes this even more annoying. I've never made a C (I've made my fair share of B's and B+'s, about 6 total - and all A's). I'm worried about what a C would do to my science GPA.

tl;dr Should I drop Biochem 2, a class that isn't recommended for med school, take the W on my transcript, or go for the C+? Which one looks worse? How bad is one W anyway?

Thanks all

drop it if it affects your mark negatively and take it next year

I would argue that biochem is definitely at least recommended by med schools, because you see the material again in med school. Of course, one W wouldn't look as bad as a C would, but I'm sure someone on an adcom would wonder if you dropped biochem because you couldn't understand the material or handle the workload. Just be prepared to explain in an interview if necessary, because some interviewers are very thorough.

It's Biochem 2 - the metabolism course. Biochem 1 is the Macromolecules section that IS recommended or required at most med schools. And I'll be taking that next semester as a senior. At our school, biochem 2 is the notorious killer and, in my case, not part of my major.

So a W doesn't look bad? I'm not worried about explaining it at an interview - i think it's all a matter of knowing my limits and this year, I reached it. But I'm more worried about being "screened" out and not being offered an interview. is that something that should concern me?

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Eh..I don't think you would get screened out if this is your only W. And the metabolism course is the one we'll be encountering in med school. So it is definitely tough. Best of luck to you!
