Dropping reimbursements

So on the interview trail, I have heard people talking about the drop in reimbursements that are coming. Anyone have an idea of how high these drops will be?
Are rad-oncs looking at half what they are making now, or how significant will it be?

It's very difficult to say. Every year, Congress passes a one-two year extension to avoid scheduled Medicare cuts. This is not sustainable. However it's anyone's guess to when they will finally consent to cuts. It will probably be a 30% so drop in reimbursement.

Will private insurances follow suit? Probably in time.

The other issue is the inevitable change in fee for service to fee for disease. You will b given a lump sump for each cancer treatment regardless of how it's done. This will probably cut down on over utilization. Also we will like see a rise in professional partnerships between various Oncolgy specialties.

Thanks for your post. What is the typical range of salaries that are seen in rad-onc these days 200-400K; is rad-onc going to be paid what GP's get paid now you think? Also, how do you think it will change the competitiveness of the field as well?

Good questions, but check out GFunk's FAQ. He actually has a section that specifically talks about today's Rad Onc salaries. He just started to work, so those numbers most likely reflect what starting salaries are like today.
