What are you guys using for alveolar osteitis packing. Not that any of my 3rds cases get dry socket, but hypothetically speaking.

I called Canfield on Friday, and got the same answer I always get. "Our product should be available next month." This was the same answer I got in May.

Currently, if I ever had a patient with dry socket 🙂, I would take a strip of iodoform gauze and coat it with a mixture of eugenol, petroleum jelly and maybe some topical benzocaine. I am just curious to what other's are doing.

On a side note, I got a call at midnight this morning from a nurse at the hospital asking me about a patient who swollowed a dressing two hours earlier. This was a first. And NO I didn't place the dressing and the doc that did had no answering service.

yea, the only problem I have with that is I saw a patient who had a tooth taken out and Alvogyl was placed by another dentist for dry socket. I saw him 4 weeks post op with a complaint of pain in his ext site. I irrigated the site, and out came the Alvogyl. I attributed this to his increased pain 4 weeks after ext.

Alvogyl is a one-step, "self-eliminating" treatment which rapidly alleviates pain and provides a soothing effect throughout the healing process. Its fibrous consistency allows for easy filling of the socket and good adherence during the entire healing process. The active ingredients of Alvogyl include eugenol for analgesic action, butamben for anesthetic action, and iodoform for anti-microbial action. I obviously didn't see this specific case & I do believe it is possible for the Alvogyl to not self-eliminate. I do believe that Alvogyl is the ideal form of tx. and you don't have any of the complications that may arise w/ other such therapies (i.e. swallowing / retention issues / phone ringing after hours). But as always, for each their own.
