Hello guys, I am deciding on whether to dual apply to radonc and anesthesia. My schedule is all radonc until october. Is it feasible to do my anesthesia sub-i so late in october?

I enjoyed my anesthesia rotation in surgery so that's why I am considering it heavily.

You're going to get a lot of questions about your commitment to the field of Anesthesiology. I got questioned at every interview just because I had done some Urology research and had one letter from a urologist, despite doing nothing but Anesthesia and Anesthesia subspecialty electives as an MS4.

For that matter, why the interest in such different fields? Rad Onc is the sort of field I wish I could enjoy, but it seems boring to me. I understand the lifestyle and financial benefits of this field.

Thanks LJ. I have been interested in gas since first year and I was involved in research until ms2. Then I started speaking to an upperclassmate who introduced me to radonc and i fell in love with it

With Rad Onc being as competitive as it is (240/244 on step 1/2 according to charting outcomes 2011), its definitely smart to apply to a backup specialty, especially when it is a backup that you do seem to have genuine interest in. People tend to make a big deal about rad onc and anesthesiology being so different, or any other specialty and anesthesiology being so different. But the bottom line is that people can be happy in multiple specialties even if they specialties are so so different. With the match processes becoming more and more competitive every year, the main goal should be to match. While it would be more noble to shoot for the stars and just apply to rad onc, you should be realistic and realize its better to match in your second choice specialty than not match at all.

Anesthesia is becoming more and more competitive each year. But each year, there are unfilled positions in the match. I know people with stellar step one scores and great CVs who do anesthesia but I also know people who matched that failed step one. Anesthesia is a great backup especially when applying to highly competitive specialties because it is a fantastic hands-on intellectually-stimulating field. Your best bet is your home program. Try to get at least 1-2 letters now for anesthesia even if it means shadowing on your time off.

best of luck

Uro i agree, especially about the part about gas becoming more competitive each year.

...would like more opinions from residents/attendings about doing my sub-i in october.

You'll be fine just do it.... Do your sub I in October and get a late LOR for your application... I never even did an anesthesia sub I and matched at a top program

What is a sub-I? Is it a dedicated rotation? What if you're doing your first rotation in October, how would that look?
