Hi guys, I know this may not be the best place to ask this but how does one dual apply to RO and anesthesia? My schedule is radonc until October. Is it feasible to still do my gas sub-i in october?

Thanks in advance

I'd ask about the anesthesia part in the anesthesia forum! Why are you dual applying? Anesthesia and rad onc are extremely different fields so I'm just curious.

Is it a fear of not matching in rad onc? There's a lot of misinformation and confused deans out there, so it may be worthwhile to post your stats on this forum to get some input about your competitiveness before going through the trouble of dual applying.

So are you implying you don't think you will match in rad onc with those stats so you are applying to anesthesia just in case? You said you decided on rad onc. Unless I am missing something I don't see a good reason to apply to anesthesia. You have a good shot of matching in rad onc. Board scores are fine. More publications to show for research would be the only thing to improve your application and if you wanted to seal the deal then you could take a year off for research. That is a much better idea than matching into a specialty that doesn't excite you or excites you far less than rad onc.

Ramses thanks for your vote of confidence. Yes, I am concerned about not matching due to the crazy competition. I've had a few qualified folks tell me "dont worry you'll match" but i know it's not that simple. The year off plan is definitely on my radar but I am an older candidate and thus a little hesitant. I did enjoy my anesthesia rotation on surgery so that's why I am considering dual applying.

Dude, I am the oldest resident in my department and also one of the most junior. I understand what your saying but I can also tell you I love rad onc so much. I am one of the few people that seemed to enjoy my medicine year. Even still, nothing else in medicine is anything like what we do and I would hate have missed out on this. One year is not as big as it seems, and you may not even need it.

I am also an older candidate, and sincerely think you should do what most people do:

1) Apply to all 80ish programs
2) Apply to a good mix of prelim medicine and TY programs
3) Go on all Rad Onc interviews you can
4) Rank a few prelim med or TY programs at the bottom of your primary rank list as your back up.
5a) Match to Rad Onc and live happily ever after
5b) If you don't match to rad onc you'll still have a job after you graduate
6) Start your medicine year and keep your eyes open for any PGY-2 spots that open up in Rad Onc or Anesthesia which both come up often during the year
7) Reapply to Rad onc and anesthesia during your intern year.
8) Match to either Rad Onc or Anesthesia
9) During your year off you can moonlight in urgent cares and probably make double what you would make as a resident and store up a nest egg before starting residency.

As an aside, while humbling when your senior residents or attendings are your age or younger, its not that big of a deal. Rad Onc is incredible, and although I'm starting to enjoy my TY a little more than I was a few weeks ago, I am still reminded daily that I made the right choice.

Thanks Sheldor. This was super informative. I think this forum embodies one of the things I love most about radonc - the collegiality of radonc physicians.

Solid advice that no advisers want to give.

Are you planning on applying to both specialties in the same hospital? Will dual applying result in getting ranked low or not getting interviews because this is seen as lack of commitment to either specialty?

Yeah, don't interview at the same places- there is a chance word could get around. Otherwise, the advice above is good. Both great fields, but completely different. I don't think you go wrong with a career in either, but I'm partial to one of them 🙂
