Dual US/CAD citizen going to private USMD school next year. Graduated from ontario undergrad.

I am currently weighing my financial options so I wanted to know if there how people in a similar situation who plan to finance their education mostly through external sources. How do you plan on doing it?

I am also looking for anybody that is currently/ or has gone through CaRMS process from a USMD school. Would love to PM you with some questions.

Would appreciate any insight. Some questions I have include:

1) How the &#%! am i going to afford this

2) I understand that CaRMS gets first dibs on applicants that apply to NRMP and CaRMS. How does this work with the early match programs like optho and urology?

3) How difficult is it to match and/or come back to Ontario in a non primary-care specialty? Primary care? I won't be needing a Visa to do residency in US if I choose to do so, so I'm not bound by the H1B or J1 restrictions. I'm guessing it's all about getting what the Royal College feels is equivalent training in that specialty but I am not sure what that entails as it's most likely specialty-specific. I am looking to come back to Ontario specifically if that makes a difference

1) What school and whats the total COA? You can get Canadian provincial/federal loans for about 10-15k CAD per year. Then do the math yourself to see if it makes sense to get a 275K CAD bank LOC and convert that to pay USD tuition....or to get a US loan in the first place, the interest rates for US loans are higher...but it may even out with the currency conversion fees etc.

2) Whatever match that comes first and you match to, is binding. So if optho/uro in the USA happened before carms...then that would be binding.

3). A USMD in theory has the same odds as CMG, just that you dont have a home school to rely on. Why not just focus your efforts on residencies in the US? You wont need a visa, so you have free reign. But of course its all to early to tell until you figure out what specialty you want to go for. Youll have to do research to figre out if the residency you go for, if the US equiv matches up easily for royal college requirements.

Don't forget, that many of the super competitive specialties, will req fellowships etc...and that its becoming more common for Canadian specialist to head south to the US. So if you go for something that isn't employable in Canada, it would make sense to just stay in the US anyways.

Youll have to do research into requirments...but again, not necessary at the moment to decide since you're too early in the process.

Most people can't, to put it honestly. You need some funding source above the student loans and LOC which aren't often near enough. There really is no easy answer. Most people, myself included, don't apply to the US for this very reason. It's pretty much impossible to afford for most regular people
