I'm hoping someone can give me some advice on this - I'm working on the supplemental application for the University of Dublin program and the personal statement is supposed to be short and to the point but the character limit is 32,000 (hardly short!!). Has anyone done this and been successful and if so, how long was your statement? Thanks!

I was successful last application cycle. I was pretty far from the 32,000 character limit. I believe VMCAS gave a 5000 character limit or something. I think my Dublin statement was around 6000-7000. You're not expected to fill the entire amount allotted. Maybe DogTyred will pop her head on here and say something too since I know she was successful last semester.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I wouldn't expect anyone to write over 10,000 anyways.

Thanks chii chan. Did you talk about Ireland in general? And the city of Dublin specifically? Or did you just talk about the school itself?

I was successful at the Dublin application too. I was lazy and just copied my personal statement from VMCAS. Didn't change a word. They didn't seem to care or ask for anything more related to why Dublin. So, don't worry too much about it. You'll be fine.

I didn't talk about Dublin or Ireland at all. Just my interest in vet med, etc. I didn't copy my personal statement from VMCAS though. I thought that wouldn't be allowed. All of the information in it was similar though.

Wow! I'm glad that you both told me that so that I don't waste hours researching Ireland. Thanks so much for the advice!

Since you're already in the process, maybe you're a good person to ask. The VMCAS says that you apply to Dublin through them, but when I look at the schools website it says use the Atlantic Bridge program and doesn't mention VMCAS. What is the right procedure?

I started with the Atlantic Bridge Program back in June, since originally this year I was only going to apply to UCD (Dublin, not Davis 😉 ) But things changed! I asked the contact I had spoken to a ABP, and they told me to continue with my ABP applicaiton and not to do the VMCAS.

Basically the feeling I got from them is that you can do either one, but don't do both.

Good to know. They aren't that high on my list though, unless I could get into the 4 year program. What other schools are you applying to?

VMRCVM (IS)
Tuskegee
Illinois
Edinburgh

And still deciding between Missouri and Wisconsin...both more of reach b/c my cGPA is not that high, but I really, really like both programs. I am also keeping my fingers crossed for 4 yr program at Dick and Dublin.

Good luck with your apps!! I am not sure if you are as insane as me about them right now, but it is all I think about!!😳

I was sucessful last year, as was a friend of mine. I seemed to recall them asking "why UCD" or something of the sort, so I used my VMCAS pers. stmt. and just added some blurbs about why I liked their particular school/the idea of studying abroad in general. But my friend was lazy and just copied her VMCAS verbatim and received her acceptance phone call way before I did, so take from that what you will. 😀

I think I will do what you did - use the personal statement and just add a bit about their program! Thanks for the advice
