I want to preface this by saying that I know I am incredibly fortunate to be in this position and hope I am not coming off as arrogant or ungrateful. I am a first-generation, low-income student and never could have imagined myself making this post 1 year ago.

I'm grateful to have been accepted by both Duke and Mayo-AZ but am completely stuck between the two. The handful of specialties I'm interested in include ortho, aneshesia, plastics, heme/onc, neuro-onc, IR, and rad onc. I'm a research-heavy applicant and hope to continue heavily engaging in research throughout med school.

Duke (COA: 40-50K/year):
  • Pros:
    • P/F all 4 years (there's some word going around that sub-i's might change to H/HP/P/F)
    • 1-year preclinical
    • Built-in research year in M3
    • Strong mentorship in virtually all specialties
    • Historically GREAT match lists
    • Extensive extracurriculars
    • Diverse patient population
    • Med students seemed happy at SLW
    • Higher prestige???
    • Duke basketball (need I say more?)
  • Cons:
    • Durham (I'm a big city person and was not impressed with Durham's city-life when I visited tbh. But I do love the nature there)
    • Far from family, home, and connections (This is a big one for me. My family, partner, and I are all from AZ, so the adjustment would be difficult for me I think. If you guys have tips on this, please lmk)
    • Less structured Step 1 and 2 study time
    • Cohort can be competitive and and less tight-knit (I had mixed feedback on this but figured I would include it here)

Mayo-AZ (COA: 35-40K/year):
  • Pros:
    • Friends, family, partner, and professional connections are all in AZ
    • 1.5-year preclinical (potentially less-stress compared to 1-year preclinical from Duke?)
    • Dedicated Step study time
    • Selectives (flexible curriculum and would allow for early exploration of clinical interests)
    • 50-person cohort (Mayo is known for its super tight-knit and collaborative culture)
    • AZ/Scottsdale/Phoenix (might be surprising but there's sooooo much to do in Scottsdale and Phoenix. Snow and forests are a 2-hour drive away. And the beach is a 4-hour drive away in San Diego or LA)
    • Can travel to Mayo MN and Mayo FL for research, masters, selectives, rotations, etc.
    • Easier time matching back to Mayo? (Not sure if I'd want to stay in the Mayo system but I know Mayo-AZ is getting a MASSIVE $2B expansion so that'd be a cool opportunity. MN would be awesome too)
  • Cons
    • AZ/Scottsdale/Phoenix (contradicting, but it's so hot in AZ and I'm ready to experience something new in terms of weather)
    • Not as prestigious as Duke or Mayo MN??? Not sure if residency programs view the AZ campus as distinct or if they still view it as just Mayo Clinic
    • Not as many extracurriculars compared to Duke
    • Lacks some basic and translational research opportunities, especially when compared to Duke I think
    • Patient population is not as diverse

I'm grateful for any and all insights. Thanks in advance!

How serious is your relationship with your partner? Would your partner move with you or would you have to go long distance? If its a serious relationship and Duke would require long distance, then I think the decision here should be clear. It's not like we're talking about a no-name school vs Duke. This is Mayo, undeniably one of the best hospital systems and med schools in the country. There is no opportunity that won't be within reach, so if Mayo lets you avoid long distance and you prefer the location, I would choose it and not look back.

If long distance isn't a factor for you, then this becomes a little tougher. Were you able to visit Mayo during their SLW? Do you have a preference for what region of the country you'd like to match in (either school will help you match anywhere, but if you want to stay in AZ/southwest then Mayo probably has the edge)? Do you care about having a larger university system near by (for some its a pro and for others its a con or non-factor)?

As for your concerns about the perception of Mayo's AZ compared to MN, I refer you to this match list: https://medschoolapply.mayo.edu/JQF...der=SecondLookMD&file=2026_NTL_Match_List.pdf
You can see that the results are similarly impressive across both campuses. Differences in the regions that students match into can almost certainly be chalked up to regional preferences.

For duke, it will be P/F for your year (the curriculum is set by the time you're applying/admitted). Cohort is also the least competitive of all peer schools from the students I've talked to

It's complicated to explain but distance wouldn't be too much of an issue, even with my partner being in Arizona. I think having spent time at Mayo's AZ campus and living in AZ my whole life provides a blanket of security for me that I wouldn't have, at least initially, if I had to move across the country.

I have no idea where I'd want to match but I think having the flexibility to match in the east coast would be nice, which Duke's strong regional ties would support. Regarding having a larger university system nearby, I don't have a strong preference either way but both offer that -- DukeMed and Duke University of course and Mayo's partnership with and close proximity to ASU. I'm hoping that because I have major ties to AZ, it wouldn't be as hard to match back home if I wanted to. And thanks for linking their match list! Saw that as an accepted student and I'm glad they're establishing themselves year by year.

Still torn but I'm visiting Mayo this weekend so hopefully I'll have more clarity after this. Thanks for the reply!
