I want to preface this by saying that I know I am incredibly fortunate to be in this position and hope I am not coming off as arrogant or ungrateful. I am a first-generation, low-income student and never could have imagined myself making this post 1 year ago.
I'm grateful to have been accepted by both Duke and Mayo-AZ but am completely stuck between the two. The handful of specialties I'm interested in include ortho, aneshesia, plastics, heme/onc, neuro-onc, IR, and rad onc. I'm a research-heavy applicant and hope to continue heavily engaging in research throughout med school.
Duke (COA: 40-50K/year):
Mayo-AZ (COA: 35-40K/year):
I'm grateful for any and all insights. Thanks in advance!

Duke (COA: 40-50K/year):
- Pros:
- P/F all 4 years (there's some word going around that sub-i's might change to H/HP/P/F)
- 1-year preclinical
- Built-in research year in M3
- Strong mentorship in virtually all specialties
- Historically GREAT match lists
- Extensive extracurriculars
- Diverse patient population
- Med students seemed happy at SLW
- Higher prestige???
- Duke basketball (need I say more?)
- Cons:
- Durham (I'm a big city person and was not impressed with Durham's city-life when I visited tbh. But I do love the nature there)
- Far from family, home, and connections (This is a big one for me. My family, partner, and I are all from AZ, so the adjustment would be difficult for me I think. If you guys have tips on this, please lmk)
- Less structured Step 1 and 2 study time
- Cohort can be competitive and and less tight-knit (I had mixed feedback on this but figured I would include it here)
Mayo-AZ (COA: 35-40K/year):
- Pros:
- Friends, family, partner, and professional connections are all in AZ
- 1.5-year preclinical (potentially less-stress compared to 1-year preclinical from Duke?)
- Dedicated Step study time
- Selectives (flexible curriculum and would allow for early exploration of clinical interests)
- 50-person cohort (Mayo is known for its super tight-knit and collaborative culture)
- AZ/Scottsdale/Phoenix (might be surprising but there's sooooo much to do in Scottsdale and Phoenix. Snow and forests are a 2-hour drive away. And the beach is a 4-hour drive away in San Diego or LA)
- Can travel to Mayo MN and Mayo FL for research, masters, selectives, rotations, etc.
- Easier time matching back to Mayo? (Not sure if I'd want to stay in the Mayo system but I know Mayo-AZ is getting a MASSIVE $2B expansion so that'd be a cool opportunity. MN would be awesome too)
- Cons
- AZ/Scottsdale/Phoenix (contradicting, but it's so hot in AZ and I'm ready to experience something new in terms of weather)
- Not as prestigious as Duke or Mayo MN??? Not sure if residency programs view the AZ campus as distinct or if they still view it as just Mayo Clinic
- Not as many extracurriculars compared to Duke
- Lacks some basic and translational research opportunities, especially when compared to Duke I think
- Patient population is not as diverse
I'm grateful for any and all insights. Thanks in advance!
