Just got my Duke financial aid offer and it made this a bit closer than I expected.

Duke
Pros:

  • Closer to family (2 hours drive)
  • Would only have to move 10 miles
  • P/F the whole time
  • Slightly better name brand/outcomes?
  • Excellent vibes at second look
  • Getting research seems super easy, like they basically hand it to you
Cons:
  • About $30k / year more total CoA
  • Durham can be boring

NYU
Pros:

  • Free tuition
  • 3 year option (but idk what I want to do, so likely to take 4 anyway)
  • Admin seems nice, very transparent
  • NYC
  • Still have some family ~an hour away
  • Wouldn't need a car
  • School pays for health insurance

Cons:
  • Have to live on campus in a shoebox
  • Farther from immediate family
  • Graded clerkships

Gut is that I should just save the money and go to NYU, but I'm interested to hear everyone's input.

Current Duke student! Might be biased but I love Duke! I will say tho 120k difference is not something to take on lightly but also factor in that NYC is more expensive and that it is easily possible to live under the advertised DukeMed budget (esp if youre good on budgeting+okay having 1 roomate/cheaper place!)

Also if youre on financial aid, your health insurance premium will be paid for 60% (ie you only pay 40% of the premium)

Def NYU! Saving the money is no joke; congratulations on two great schools!

Choosing Duke would not be an unjustifiable choice here, especially if staying near family is very important to you, but other than that nothing you listed seems worth an additional $120k+interest.
