People say this every year, but Duke always gets over 5,000 AMCAS applications, and only about 2,000-2,500 complete the secondary. Still, that's a TON of applicants to screen. The nice thing is that it helps weed out people who are less serious about the school anyway. If some applicants view it as not worth their time to complete the secondary then it's really not worth the admissions committee's time to screen their application either, in my opinion. Although the essays are perceived as "annoying" and "too numerous" by many applicants, they actually serve a very important purpose and are definitely used heavily during the application and screening process.
(I'm not on the ad-com, but have been involved in the admissions process in the past)
So I guess this is a bit off topic, but I'm an undergrad (105+ credits) and will be applying to medical schools this coming cycle. Duke is like my dream school, I think it may be a long shot as far as my GPA and stuff (anyone else see the 3.89 median GPA listed in this years MSAR), but still on my list. I really want to get into their MD/PhD Program. Any of you have details about it? Besides the seemingly killer secondary application and the sort of information that isn't listed on their website. Like what kind of students to they accept into the MSTP and what their credentials are.
I have a 3.75 GPA, haven't taken the MCAT but have gotten a 35 average on practice MCATs, I have 3 poster presentations at national conferences (ICAAC and SOT) a regionaly paper presentation, and a year and a half of research experience. I volunteer, TA, tutor, and all that other good stuff.
I definitely would appreciate feedback! Thanks!
Sounds like you're right on track. I've had a decent amount of exposure to MD-PhD's at Duke in my lab and others, and they don't seem particularly special. By that I mean they had good enough credentials to get into the top-tier MSTP's, but they didn't seem to have absolutely amazing credentials. If you think you have a shot at the best MSTP's, you have a shot at Duke. Just curious, why is it your dream school?
Ergh. Their online PAS system is having serious issues again. All I get when I log in is the message that "Something Unexpected happened." I guess they're not expecting anyone to actually be taking advantage of their extended deadlines, huh? Anyone else having issues?
Duke just has this amazing curriculum. It's different than any other school, and I like the set up. I like that everyone writes a thesis, in the third year, but those that are working towards a second degree can use that year towards their second degree. I also like that the second year is clinical so that you get a feel for what you may want to go into before settling down to do research in the third year, because while I think that some people have an idea of what they'd want to go into before getting to medical school, how can you really know without the most up close and personal experience?
