The real problem is that dumb people produce a lot of dumb children while smart people produce not as many children.

Yeah, I don't think this is true for dumb vs. smart so much as poor vs. rich. Of course if you grow up with rich people, I can see how you'd get confused. Rich people tend to think poor people are dumb.

edit: heh, can't resist trying to start a class war. you can tell i'm procrastinating.

HEY! HEY! I can be rich and dumb if I want to be!

I disagree.... Smart, poor people realize that they can't support any more children and act accordingly.

i think this guy proves that through hardwork and persistence, anyone can overcome their addictions or disorders...

I did a quick search on this matter and this is what I found.
Here is the link.

http://www.gynalternatives.com/abnormal_uterine_bleeding.htm

Other Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
Although usually a woman will stop having menstrual periods if she is pregnant, bleeding during pregnancy is not uncommon. If the pregnancy is abnormal, such as a tubal pregnancy or impending miscarriage, the bleeding may be interpreted as being from a menstrual period rather than a complication of pregnancy. Because pregnancy is such a common cause of abnormal bleeding, a pregnancy test should be among the first tests in anyone who is sexually active, even if she is "sure" she couldn't be pregnant!

Thyroid disorders can cause heavy bleeding, as can disorders in which the blood does not clot normally. A physician can test for these problems if they are suspected of contributing to the abnormal bleeding.

I think we have exhausted this topic a little, but for the record, neither tubal pregnancies nor impending miscarriages will end in a live birth. 😉

Just trying to show you that sometimes there are reasons why a person does not know that they are pregnant until they deliver the baby. And though you are right about tubal pregnancies and miscarriages you can't deny the fact that people with thyroid problems can give birth. In fact one of my best friends moms kept bleeding throughout her pregnancy with my friend. The reason why I lament on this subject matter is because a lot of premeds are quick to assume that they know a lot about medicine and pass judgement all too quickly on people (like the ones that do not know that they are pregnant) instead of pausing to analyze the situation and to asses their knowledge of the subject matter.

a lot of younger girls (~15) pretend they don't know that they're preggers so that their parents dont find out they've been throwing their legs open for the cable guy. or poolman. or even just to masterbate. that's why sex as taboo is passe and needs to be extinguished.

I have to say - as a medic I transported a girl with a normal looking abdomen, she was married for 3 years had a miscarriage 5 months previous, history of abdominal pain for 5 hours with nausea. She'd been having irregular "periods" since the miscarriage. 30 minutes after arriving at the ER she had a 6.5 lb baby - turns out she was pregnant with TWINS and miscarried one of them. She really had no idea she was pregnant and when we saw her and her husband later they were celebrating like no tomorrow. She sure as heck didn't look pregnant either - she was about a size 8 with literally nothing showing.

On the other hand, there are lots of people I have taken that are definitely pregnant that "deny" it. Including one who was absolutely freekin' pg delivering right then and there while telling her parents "No, Mom, I didn't have sex! I swear! This baby isn't mine!" Yeah. Right.

I spent about 4 minutes looking for the beer can in that picture to go along with the cigarette.

My personal favorite of the perpetual patient? The folks that are on oxygen for COPD, still smoking, and light one up with the O2 on their face. They're always so surprised when the oxygen blows up (heck, one guy I ran on as a medic blew out two walls of a hotel doing this). You'd think they'd learn from that lesson - especially when everyone tells them they can't smoke while they've got oxygen on/running - it blows up. And yet I've run on at least 5 people who have blown up their oxygen more than once. One guy five times. No kidding. And two weeks later I saw him outside his house smoking with his oxygen on.

Look at it this way - those folks are the reason we will never be out of a job. They're going to allow us to pay our student loans.

Awwww that's sooooooooo sweet, and such a beautiful story. Glad things worked out for that couple.

I remember a few years ago having a classmate who was pregnant with her 2nd or 3rd child. When I saw her she looked skinnier then most people I know and you wouldn't even be able to spot the bump in her belly. I looked at her and I was like NO WAY!! But they say some people don't really change that much in their weight especially those people who are naturally skinny.

Another girl I know looks exactly as she did prior to having her baby. It amazes me how these people remain so skinny.

EDITED: I think I quoted the wrong post of yours. I was referring to the post where you posted about the pregnant gal that had lost one twin and thought she had lost both her kids but then delivered. Thanks

That first story is awesome.

Sometimes they can't help it. Some women, especially young girls, because of their really tight abdominal muscles, do not show their pregnancy as much as other women, and simply attribute the small bump to weight gain.

Far more often the folks who don't know they are pregnant are the morbidly obese, who really wouldn't notice an additional 20 lbs.

The person might be uneducated and not realize that's a baby kicking and might think its just some sort of pain. Others, like migrant workers, might not go until delivery due to lack of money and needing to constantly work just for sake of survival. That's what I gathered from the doc that spoke about rural med to us sometime back.

Probably morbidly obese people wouldn't get pregnant as often. For obvious reasons.
