so i'm trying to book a cheap hotel room and they only have smoking. i have asthma. is there usually a smoke smell in these rooms? does the smell seep into things like the carpet, curtains, bedding? i could pay an extra 40 bucks at a different hotel that has available rooms but would rather not.

Yes, the entire room WILL smell like smoke and it may absorb into your clothes as well.

Pay the extra for the non-smoking room...you won't regret it.

It really depends on the hotel. I've stayed in several smoking rooms (thanks to having the rooms booked for me), and one was kind of gross, one was so-so but they came in and sprayed air freshener (which was actually worse), and one you couldn't even tell. I know that isn't very helpful to you, though - sorry!

i would just pay extra for non-smoking. who needs the added variable before an interview?

👍

My point exactly...

I request non-smoking every time I stay at a hotel. The few times they have given me smoking room by mistake, I can tell immediately. I usually call the front desk and tell them and they find me a new room. I don't think I've ever had them charge me extra, and I thought most places have a mix of both nowadays, wonder why the place has only smoking rooms?

gosh i hate cigarettes - the scent of that garbage makes me gag.

one word:

ghetto

There is a reason why this place is $40 cheaper than anywhere else. But hey, maybe you will get free pr0n...

it's actually a 3 star days inn.

i stayed in a 11d/night hostel once in spain. it was totally ghetto and had the worse smoke smell ever...like they lit a bonfire in the room and left it there to die out. i was out til 7am out a club and crashed there for only 2 hours...after 2 short hours, my eyes stung and i couldn't breathe. i was just hoping it wouldn't be so bad here in the US. anyway, i'll just pay extra. who needs an asthma attack before an interview?

What do you expect in spain? I lived there for four years and let me tell you, just like most of europe, smoking is EVERYWHERE -- it's a part of the culture, kids start smoking at an age as early as thirteen there. Just like the drinking, legal drinking age? yeah sure.

i stayed in dozens of hostels and none of them had a smoke smell. just that one in granada. well...it was also the only one i paid 11 bucks for

But you have to admit that in europe smoking IS EVERYWHERE.... restaurants, metro station, bus stop, mcdonalds, bars, school (of course they had to hide though  ), etc.

Coincidentally, I had the exact same problem last night and I also have asthma. I tried to check out a room but they only had smoking left. I just arrived in town and I was really tired so I didn't feel like driving to another hotel. The lady let me take a look at a room and the smell was pretty bad. I ended up just finding another hotel. There's no doubt that the smell would have seeped into my clothes.
