I thought this would be a good thread for anyone out there that doesn't have anyone to talk to about EM and has lots of questions...many which seem to dumb to most I'm sure.

So I will start:

1. I know a DO can apply to allopathic EM residencies but can a MD apply to osteopathic EM residencies?

2. What is the difference between a LOR and a SLOR?

3. How does the SLOR work (where do I get the form, does my writer send it to my school, when should I have it completed by, etc)?

3. One EM residency I was looking at listed itself as a PGY2-PGY4 program. What the hell happens in the first year of that residency?

1. I assume so, but didn't myself.

2. A SLOR is a LOR that is filled out by a program director, and there is a special format to it.

3. You don't worry about it - you just ask for it, and they know what to do. (Every EM hopeful asks for one, so they know you will want it.) It goes with the rest of your letters, to, um, wherever your letters go. Which is suddenly making me realize that I'm now getting to the point where I will have to defer to those, ahem, more "fresh" in the process. Gak. Does this mean I'm getting old?

3b. A PGY 2-4 is just that. You have to do a separate PGY1 year somewhere else, either as a prelim med/surg or a transitional year. This also means you would have 2 matches instead of just one.

4. Does anyone else think that the explosives-in-the-underwear-terrorist merits an honorable mention somewhere in the "things I learn from my patients" thread? And do we want to bet that some "dude" put him up to it?

(Just had to throw that in somewhere. It's random, I'm tired, and the wine wonders about such things.)

1. I know a DO can apply to allopathic EM residencies but can a MD apply to osteopathic EM residencies? No, Osteopathic Residencies are for DO Students only.

2. What is the difference between a LOR and a SLOR? And SLOR is a Standard Letter - More like a form, to fill out, so everyone can be compared one the same merits, without all the flowery language. It can be found here: http://www.cordem.org/slor.htm

3. How does the SLOR work (where do I get the form, does my writer send it to my school, when should I have it completed by, etc)?
Give it to the EM Physician who knows you or has means to fill it out (committee or something). The higher up the person the better, but any EM physician will do, as long as it is a good one.

3. One EM residency I was looking at listed itself as a PGY2-PGY4 program. What the hell happens in the first year of that residency?
Most places now have combined 1-4 programs (for DO) or 1-3 MD programs. Some DO programs have 2-4 programs, with a seperate internship. Some have 2-4 with a tracked internship. Depends on the program.

I'm guessing that he was on the flight so he could go to Bible study, with his grandma, and he was SOCMOB before he got to the airport, and "some dude" made him put explosives in his underwear.

You are welcome. And you can file that under "Things Katydid Learned Hanging Around This Forum For A Couple Of Years."
