Dumb question???

Hi everyone,
This is probably the dumbest question, but I figured that my fellow SDNr's are the best people to ask since many of you have flown all over the place to attend interviews. How does everyone keep their suits from wrinkling??? I am so nervous that my pantsuit is going to wind up getting all wrinkled on the plane ride!!Advice anyone 😕 😕

if it does get wrinkled, try this trick: hang your suit in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam will help straighten it out...works as well as an iron.

I always carried my garment bag onboard, you have to hog a whole overhead compartment for yourself but it's worth not having to iron your suit when you get there.

garment bag is a convenient carry-on, if you're sitting close to a business class section, you can hang it there (noone will object even if you're not flying business class yourself). Otherwise, just make sure noone dumps anything on top of it :wink:

i got a little travel iron. i just steam the suit a little when i get to my destination. or you can try that shower trick.

My question is worse...

My plane will land at 11:35pm. I'm not going to rent a car because it will cost me $150ish. I can get around using busses and taxis for much less. My question: Do airports usually have taxi services readily available, or will I have to request that a taxi meet me ahead of time? I'm sure I can call a taxi when I arrive if need be (well, not really sure...just hoping). Flying in with no means to get to my hotel is kinda nerve wracking.

I am probably the worst person to answer this but I would assume that most airports have taxi services (rural and obviously urban). If you are that nervous, why don't you call the airport that you will be arriving at? By the way, how do you transport your suit??? :wink:

Swampman: I think you should find an abundance cabs at the airport. I think they get a lot of business there.

About the suit... I've only had to fly to one interview. I brought a sleeping bag (I was staying with a student) and I rolled the suit bag around the sleeping bag to keep it from getting wrinkles. I just tossed the sleeping bag with my suit bag into a suitcase and carried my misc stuff in a bookbag. I had someone pick me up when I made this trip, so I didn't have to worry about the taxi.

You city dwellers will probably find this funny, but I doubt you would need more than two hands to count the # of taxis I've used in my lifetime. <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Swampman, 11:35 is not late at all. At the end of my NYC trip last year, I decided to sleep at JFK cuz I had an early flight... saw taxis all night long. If you're really scared, look up local taxi companies on the net and write down a few numbers... then call them beforehand and ask if they can send a cab your way. (Also, have you checked your hotel to see if they have a shuttle?)

That is a GREAT idea swampman!!! Now I know how I am going to transport my suit (alright I am a geek). I would think that there would be some taxis around when you arrive at the airport. I would figure, especially in a rural area, that taxis would hang around when they know a flight is going to arrive without regards to time (specifically for the reason that you brought up- in some areas people don't use taxis often so incoming passengers are a way to make extra money).

My hotel didn't sound too thrilled about making taxi arrangments on my behalf, but they said it could be done. This would include having me picked up at the hotel and taken wherever I need to go. They didn't say they would have me picked up at the airport, though. I'll take your word and assume there will be plenty of taxis available. If I get stuck at the airport, though, I'm coming after you! 🙂 The airport is Norfolk International in VA. I don't know if its business comes close to that of JFK.

SwampMan: right before you exit the airport, there is always a cluster of phone (not pay phones). every airport has them. u can use them to call hotels, cabs, and even pizza. anyway, ask where they are and call a cab. good luck on your interview.

It's funny, I never thought about taking a taxi. I took the train from the airport when I interveiwed at Wash U and Jefferson. The schools gave descriptions on how to get from the airport to the school. I stayed at Wash U when I interveiwed there but for Jefferson, I had to find my way to the school first, then look for the nearest hotel.

daisygirl: I just realized that I won't need a sleeping bag this trip. Now I have to worry about transporting my suit without wrinkling it! My suit sucks. At the beginning of this interview season, it fit really well. Now it is uncomfortably tight! I don't want to bother with having it altered this late in the cycle, so I guess I have to tough it out for one more interview (maybe two). Hopefully I'll have the time to get it altered for occasions in the future. Maybe I should have laid off the beer a little (I'm not even a large guy! 6'4" & 160lbs).

Swampman you could try a girdle <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> (j/k). I sure hope your suit does not wrinkle on you!!! Try taking it on as a carry-on. I can't b/c I wanted to take my bookbag and jetblue only allows one carry-on item (I don't know if the other airlines have the same rules 😕 ).

When I flew to Albany, they put me next to this reeeeeally old lady with an air tank. Apparently she and her daughter couldn't get seats together, so they were going to sit separately. The daughter asked me if I would trade with her, and I said SURE!!! (thinking I could get away from this massive tank that was taking up all my space) When I went to her seat, I realized she would have been sandwitched between two HUGE men.

Let's hope this trip is better! 😀 If not, at least it is shorter!

Swampman, unless you are taking a little bush-plane into the outback, there will be plenty of taxis ready and waiting when you arrive. My last flight was delayed and arrived at 4:00 AM. I just dragged my butt to the street and fell into one of about 10 waiting cabs...worry not.

I fly a lot for my job (3-4 times per month).Usually, when an airline says one carry-on, they mean one luggage type and a book bag or hand bag. You should try to get on with your garment bag...like someone said earlier, it's best to not check in your bags. You never know what will happen...especially if you have a connecting flight!
Anyway, good luck to you and swampman (there are always plenty of cabs at any airport). 🙂

Swampman..try calling 1-800-BlueVan, or try any shuttle. They usually have flat rates and can take you really far. For example, I'm flying into Maryland, taking the Supershuttle to D.C. and it's only gonna cost 30 dollars. They probbaly have a service in VA too. If your destination is close (mine is an hour drive) it'll probably cost less. Taxis can be so expensive sometimes, so it's better to get a flat rate si es posible.

Daisygirl: bring your suit in a garment bag and stick it in the overhead or on the little closet thing when you get on the plane. You have guts, though, I would be too afraid to fly in the same day of my interview.

Daisygirl, I would do what willbeMD said, try to take it on anyway. If they won't let you put it overhead, they would at least put it in storage underneath the plane, and you would get it as soon as the plane lands...much better (and less risky) than checking it. That's what I always did when my little boy was still in a stroller.

The only thing i don't like about the blue van (especially in the DC area...where I live) is that it can take a long time depending on how many other passengers are riding with you. I've also had the driver get lost a couple of times while he was dropping other people off before me. The last time I took it, i missed my plane, b/c the guy got lost and went 45 min out of the way.
It is cheaper than a cab, but you have to make sure your driver knows where they're going. I often fly into BWI and I live by GWU and my preferred way of getting into DC is definitey the MARC train. It's pretty fast and it's a good alternative.

thanks willBEMD..I will land at 10:30 pm, so I hope the train still runs then...I was nervous to take it alone since I've never taken the subway or anything like that alone before, but I'm making my boyfriend come with me for the trip, so he'll help me out. Thanks for the website 🙂

p.s. Just checked the site....looks like I'll be taking BlueVan to the hotel and the train to the airport on the way home

Also look into shuttle services when u want to go from the airport to a hotel..its way cheaper...( abt 1/2 the price of a taxi ).
