It's common knowledge that most doctors are generally prrreeeetty smart.

But what's the DUMBEST thing you've ever heard a doctor say?

I got one:

"Don't worry 'bout that MCAT; third time's the charm anyway. Worked for me"

-a doctor in a nearby free clinic who, shortly after, was asked not to return.

Yeah that doctor must have been a total dumb **** for taking the MCAT three times. Anyone who doesn't make at least a 45 the first time is so stupid. 🙄

😕 So you think that the doctors dismissal is related to the fact that he took the mcat 3 times?

Go work as a paramedic, some of the things that the ER docs sometimes say (either via 'online' medical direction or in person) are quite humorous.

i must be missing something...

why is that dumb?

A urologist I shadowed said something similar to me.

Do you know what his scores were? If he got a 28, 30, 34, that's not bad at all.

that's not dumb, that's funny and encouraging!

i caught a dr. looking up something on wikipedia the other day at work while he was writing a progress note. i was like DUDE SRSLY?! he could only smile sheepishly and say just wait, you'll do it too.

My evaluation from my plastics rotation said something about looking forward to practicing with me in the future. I win.

what happened with anesthesiology? Selling out for a better paying specialty already? :meanie:

I know a doctor that got a 27 on his MCAT!! what an idiot, right? 🙄

You shouldn't associate with people like that; next thing you know you'll be a sub-30 MCATer by association.

I ask every physician I work with to make sure I'm not working with anyone lower than a 35 MCAT. 🙄

But in all seriousness...are doctors supposed to be immune to human glitches that everyone else suffer?

Why has looking stuff up on wikipedia become some kind of taboo? It's reliable 99.9% of the time and if you're not sure, you can check out the citations yourself.

that's a great idea...i'm going to create a form that each physician needs to fill out before I shadow them, just to be sure they have only taken the MCAT once and received a 35+ score.

THIS! I try to stress this as much as I can to people. I challenge anyone who says otherwise to find a mistake in a wikipedia entry and they'll usually bow out.

But yea, I've seen a doc or two look at wikipedia here and there, didn't think anything about just that it was interesting.

I was watching a Ben Carson talk a few years ago (world reknown neurosurgeon) and someone asked him if he "believed" in evolution. I'm guessing this was around the time all of those high school trials were going on with intelligent design vs evolution because it seemed like a random question.

He said "no I don't believe in evolution, you wouldn't look at two slightly different cars and presume that one evolved from the other just because they look alike." I was pretty surprised by this, as I thought this would be a great time for someone who is obviously scientifically literate to help clear the air on a subject that is so obvious, instead he said something you'd expect to hear from Mike Huckabee or some other politician's mouth.

I'm sure Ben Carson is a brilliant guy and couldn't care less about my opinion of what he said. But I was still surprised.

fixed, and possibly what he meant...?

😉

true that, sorry, i didn't really mean that it was a dumb thing, it just surprised me and made me smirk interally as he's one of those dbaggy i know everything ever known about medicine doctors and he had to look it up on wiki.

Wikipedia is very useful and reliable for medical and science information. I use it all the time on the wards and wouldn't have the slightest concern about a doctor using wikipedia to double check some information.

Giving advice to NOT take the MCAT seriously and to PLAN to take it 3 times, is pretty dumb, man.

I'm sure that doctor was being tongue in cheek. And if not, who cares, you know better.

Also LOL at the poster who was morally upended at a doctor using wikipedia. It's done all the time and not every piece of medical knowledge is crucial to the treatment of a patient.

Most times I use it when I can't remember a certain word. Like the other day I was trying to remember allodynia, trismus, and a few other ranrdom medical words. I can assure you doctors aren't typing in "how to treat a heart attack" on wikipedia.

I agree, Ben Carson IS a brilliant guy, and one of my inspirations. Unfortunately, he used a poor metaphor.

So was he being sarcastic or not? I can't imagine he actually rejects evolution, but if he agrees with it then his response makes no sense to me.

Pretty sure he was being serious. It was awhile back so I can't remember exactly how he said it, but I don't think it ever entered my mind that he could be joking.

I decided to google "Ben Carson evolution" and apparently it's pretty well known that he's a young earth creationist.

Here's an interview with what seems to be some type of seventh day adventist journal.
http://www.adventistreview.org/2004-1509/story2.html

Side note: About the wikipedia thing, I think it's pretty reliable but you definitely have to be careful. When I just googled Ben Carson someone had added the n word under the main picture on his profile, but it seems to be only visible when you cache the page.

I had a doctor tell me NOT to become a doctor. He said that since I was young and good-looking, I should marry rich, use my husband, then get a divorce, taking 70% of all earnings.

saddest thing about this?

he was dead serious.

House: "The only thing that matters is what you think. Can you do the job?
Cameron: You hired a black guy because he had a juvenile record.
House: "No, it wasn't a racial thing, I didn't see a black guy. I just saw a doctor with a juvenile record. I hired Chase 'cause his dad made a phone call. I hired you because you are extremely pretty."
Cameron: "You hired me to get into my pants?"
House: "I can't believe that that would shock you. It's also not what I said. No, I hired you because you look good; it's like having a nice piece of art in the lobby."
Cameron: "I was in the top of my class."
House: "But not the top."
Cameron: "I did an internship at the Mayo Clinic."
House: "Yes, you were a very good applicant."
Cameron: "But not the best?"
House: "Would that upset you, really, to think that you were hired because of some genetic gift of beauty not some genetic gift of intelligence?"
Cameron: "I worked very hard to get where I am."
House: "But you didn't have to. People choose the paths that grant them the greatest rewards for the least amount of effort. That's the law of nature, and you defied it. That's why I hired you. You could have married rich, could have been a model, you could have just show up and people would have given you stuff. Lots of stuff, but you didn't, you worked your stunning little ass off."
Cameron: "Am I supposed to be flattered?"
House: "Gorgeous women do not go to medical school. Unless they're as damaged as they are beautiful. Were you abused by a family member?"
Cameron: "No."
House: "Sexually assaulted?"
Cameron: "No."
House: "But you are damaged, aren't you?"

its not dumb at all acutally! it shows that he was very motivated to take the test three times! I know a lot of people that give up after their second time! and Also, who are you to judge a doctor, you don't know what his situation was when he took the mcat, maybe he had to work full time, maybe he had family problems, ..... if anything I would be impressed by his drive! cuz i know I wouldn't take the mcat a third time if i do bad the first two times!

considering a nitro tab, paste, lasix, and cpap are perfectly acceptable ways of combining therapy...

That's what uptodate.com is for!

Why can't you imagine that, he is a poster-child for the Christian right.
Because I didn't know enough about him to know that...I'm seriously surprised that someone supposedly smart and versed in science would be so ignorant (call me judgmental if you want but you know its true).

My "American Chemical Society" affiliated lab manuals encourage the use of wikipedia.

Actually if you want to talk about dumb, Kerry Ellis, PhD, the founder of PCR technology that is common place in science and nobel laureatte for his discovery of such several years ago in california is now saying that HIV does not cause AIDS and goes around trying to promote that cause. that is prob. the dumbest thing I've heard when research proves otherwise and the fact that medicines targetting those structures that research has identified as being important in causing HIV and AIDS have been effective, its kinda hard for me to agree that HIV has nothing to do with AIDS.

Again, while i believe in evolution and some of you do, keep in mind you will have many classmates who don't.

There are a lot of ultra religious people out there, from ultra religious christians to the equivalent muslims and other groups that will reject the very notion of evolution.

Evolution is a highly debatable issue and there are a lot of arguments for and against it even by well rehearsed scientists and of the role of god in science.

Ben Carson is 7th day adventist like the ones who run Loma Linda University School of Medicine out in California. It is not surprising he may say this. I'm sure there will be many more who say this. I know a few friends who believe that evolution is not real and believe in creationism too. So it will be encountered everywhere. That's reality and there should be nothing shocking about it.

I guess you're right, it shouldn't have been shocking considering his religious background (had I been aware of it at the time). And I'm not one to bash or mock religion, so should I be accepted to medical school it wouldn't be a problem then as it isn't a problem now for me to respect the beliefs of others. I live in the bible belt anyway, so it's not like its the in thing to do to be non-religious.

As far as evolution being debatable, it really isn't. There really isn't any evidence for an alternate mechanism. Like any other scientific discipline, there are things that aren't well understood, but that fact doesn't negate the entire premise.
