Hellooo. I'm curious if it's feasible to have a part-time (or even full time) job while going to dental school? I just couldn't imagine being poor the whole time 🙁. I'm not at the stage to even apply at the moment, i'm just trying to get a better picture of everything. Thanks 😛

Work will be pretty much out of the question, at least during your first two years. I'm being poor at the moment, but I know things will change when I graduate and that is keeping me going.

you can definitely get a job if you budget your time, you have more free time in D school than people portray. It's really not that bad.

...but not if you wan't even the slightest chance to specialize.

Well what about bartending on the weekends? :luck:

If you're super efficient with your time, have crazy hand skills, can learn everything basically from lecture only, and don't plan on specializing, then it might be possible. I would say not to count on having a job, but to feel the situation out. If it turns out you're a super dental student, and think you can handle the extra workload, then go for it. Like most of the LDS guys at school don't do any studying or school work on Sundays, and they aren't any worse for wear.

Please. You will be loaded after you graduate. Just concentrate in school. My sister said that dental school is freaking hard. Can't cram the night before like we do now in undergrad. Mad competitive and no curve= sucky. Plus people in dental school tend to be smarter, so you need all the time you can get to study.

Dental school is not hard if all you want to do is pass. in fact, I'd venture to say *gasp* that it's easier than undergrad.... far more busier yes, but not hard.

manage your time right and you have plenty for a part time job. Many have gone through dental school and worked, you'll be fine.

I've posted this exact comment many times in the past several years. Dental school in general is a cakewalk compared to undergrad, especially my clinical years. I have no exams and nothing to study (other than reading up on materials or procedures, studying for Part 2, etc.).

It is possible. At least at IU, if you manage your time. If you go to classes, and your tests fall on Fridays it is doable. I know I rarely study Friday/Saturday/Sunday. I do most of my studying by paying good attention in the classroom and studying relatively hard Monday - Thursday. Friday and Saturday are used for going out and having fun 😉. Sunday is used for counter strike source, laundry, phone calls, and good cuisine 😉. Dental school is a lot different than undergrad in my opinion. I had so much more crap to do in undergrad, I almost always felt overwhelmed. There was always homework in this class, quiz in another class, papers, lab reports, reading assignments for discussion, etc. etc. In dental school all you really have to do is study for exams, and then work on your lab projects. Most exams require like 2-3 days of study time, some way less actually. Now exams are a lot more common in dental school, but they are also easier than undergrad. It is simply memorization. Get used to it and you will do just fine. Not much thinking involved because the material is not very difficult. You will never be asked to do the integral of tan x on the spot, lol. Now, would I want to work since I probably have the time to do so? HELL NO. I would rather go out and have fun with my gf and friends when I am not studying. Have a nice day. :meanie:

Oh man, now i wanna be a D3 student!!! NOW!!!

Is there any way we can test out of the first 2 years???

I envy you!

I am at UNLV, just made it through my first semester. It was tough, much, much tougher than undergrad, twice the work load, in class twice the hours, plus many extra hrs doing wax ups and stuff like that. If you want to be top of your class here generally you need to spend at minimum 3 or 4 hrs studying per night, if you just want to pass, cut that time in half. Now every night is not that many hrs but if you average it out. Every school is not created equal, obviously AZ and a few other schools are not that bad from hearing from other guys on this forum. I do know a second year who is a hygienist who works saturday mornings. Second year here gets a little easier from what they are saying. But every school is so different.

It depends on your experience before you got into school, the school, whether or not you have extra duties (kids/spouse), and the like. For most of the schools I would say you probably won't have time to work, and plan on taking out loans to live. But, I have heard of people who work on the weekends and do fine. It's all up to you really. 😀 (oh, and how much you value your sleep...)
