DVM/PhD - apply now or later?

If a DVM/PhD sounds like too much for you, why don't you just do a DVM/MPH? Those jobs sounds like what the typical public health vet does, and it usually only requires an extra year.

Oh, and check out the MPVM program at UC Davis, it looks amazing and would fit you well

Minnesota has one you can do online over the summers, or distance from whatever school.

Yeah really it sounds like what you're interested in is more MPH than PhD. You've gotta be pretty crazy about research in a particular area to do a PhD in it.

Personally, I am going to decide on a PhD after first year. Then again I already have an MS in my field, and that was the way I was told to do it anyhow -- decide later after I see what the school has to offer me. Also, I do not plan to work at a university but rather private practice, so a PhD is not really needed, rather just to be boarded.

Thanks! Do I have to/should I apply for the MPH program at the same time as the DVM program? (I know the MPVM is after you already have a DVM)

I would love to go to Davis but my chances are pretty slim not being a CA resident 🙁

You don't have to apply at the same time, although a lot of schools like CSU have dual degree programs where you can finish the MPH first or do it during vet school.

Looks like I'll just have to do some serious research into the different programs...you don't think that it's easier to get in one way or the other do you?

I have no basis for this other than my own opinion, but I don't think that it is easier to get into the dual degree program right off the bad than starting vet school and then applying for the next step (be it MPH or PhD). actually, I would imagine it might be slightly easier to get into one of those programs once you've actually been admitted to a dvm program since they will be able to look at your first year grades from a professional school...if you're doing well then you should most likely be able to handle the rigours of the second degree as well. Whereas if you are applying for both together, straight out of undergrad or a masters, there is less to show the admissions committee that you are capable of doing it all and actually know what each degree entails. I hope that makes sense. I'm a little tired.

I applied joint dvm/phd and only got into the dvm portion. some programs allow application to phd later, others don't, so check with the schools before making your decision. My IS said I needed to apply to both, but could drop one or the other if I was admitted and decided I would prefer one or the other.
