Meh, even if you are applying this summer, it's not completely too late if you really want to try and also if you have some other bonus: great story/awesome MCAT and GPA/ URM/ low SES, you said you are first gen college/ really broad range of schools you are applying to.
Before I go on, I would like to say that I am a HUGE proponent of taking time off after college - I think it's good for your soul. If you can possibly be happy with waiting a year, then please do.....that said:
First of all, start shadowing today. I mean it. Send out a few emails right now to local physicians and ask to shadow. Aim to shadow 3-5 physicians in different positions/environments for around 8-12 hours each - that's two days or a few afternoons. Email more physicians in the area and ask to just talk to them. Ask them about their path to medicine, their thoughts on the profession, and their thoughts about what a successful student is like - use what you find out to guide your future essays and actions.
Throughout the next week, find two volunteering places - one clinical and one not clinical. Think really hard. Have you possibly done anything in the past that counts as volunteering? Tutoring? Clean-up efforts? Did you host prospective students at your college? Did you give tours of your college? Are you part of a church group? If you have anything like that - feel free to PM me with ideas about anything and everything you have been involved with - then do everything you can to continue doing more of the same. Gave tours? Then ask to volunteer in your admissions office. Tutored? Find a highschool/middle school/SAT/ACT/college prep volunteering position, maybe your school library has a program? The idea is that if you have done something in the past, you can list the start date as that past date and get hours in the next six months. If you gave tours last year at your college, and then volunteer 3-4 hours a week in an admissions office for the next six months, your AMCAS would make it look like an hour per week for a year and a half.
If you are desperate for volunteering, go to an office at your college, like the alum office or something similar and see if you can do work that they usually pay students to do - like call for donations - as a volunteer.
If you are a night person, you will be valued at any organization that has night shifts (rape crisis centers, Samaritans, etc). If you get trained ASAP...in the next couple of weeks....you can get some exposure to helping people that way. If you are willing to work atypical hours, you will have an easier time landing a volunteer position quickly.
Lastly, find a hobby. Are you an artist? A writer? A weight lifter? A swimmer? Take some time to continue with the activities that make you who you are. If you're into soccer, can you join an IM team? If you are a weightlifter, can you start a group that works out together? You could see if your college health center needs a volunteer to clean and check on the weight machines....be creative 🙂
Above all, please consider waiting. If you won't wait...good luck!
