i might be worrying about this too early but I'm a freshman in college and I really want to crack down on my extra curriculars, but I decided to adjust to college life in the first semester. so, I have no E.C.'s and its my second semester.

I signed up to volunteer at a hospital on campus for six hours a week and to continue volunteering over the summer, but what else? would you recommend doing research at the same time?

Thank you.

The great thing is you're starting early, so your app will show continuation, and you'll have time to build up plenty of hours

Don't do so much to where it affects your grades. You can acquire 200+ hours of volunteering with a few hours a week over the next 2.5/3 years. Just make sure to keep grades a priority.

Research is great to become involved with, and looks great on an application.

I'd also reccommend becoming involved with 1 more volunteering activity, not necessarily 6 hours a week, just do some here and there:

Habitat for Humanity
Big Brothers Big Sisters--though it's a huge commitment, make sure you can stick with it so a child doesn't end up dissappointed.

Tutor/TA/Teach:
Assuming you excel in classes, and your school has a peer tutoring program, or allows undergrads to TA/teach any of the labs, this is a great thing to have on a resume'/application. It shows leadership, and the ability to relay information to others.

Use MDapplicants (the website) to figure out what to do. Follow in the footsteps of successful people, but don't be afraid to pursue your passions. A long-term commitment with something you're serious about is what adcoms want to see, besides the obligatory shadowing/volunteering/hospital work.

I would save research for later on during junior and senior year. Unless you think you might want to do honors in major thesis or a research poster then that might take early involvement.

Volunteering wise you are doing great, switch it up in the future if you want to show variety in your service records.

Don't know if this was mentioned but try to join a medical club or prehealth club. That way you can work your way up from a member to a leadership role.

Goodluck!
