By 2015 doctors will be penalized for not e-prescribing. By 2018 it is estimated 90% of doctors will be e-prescribing. They are also trying to implement self service prescription pick up and I have even read about satelitte pharmacies where a pharmacist broadcasts via satellite. What is the future of pharmacy? Any opinions? What will the impact of e-prescribing be on pharmacists? Btw: Valtrex gets off patent next year !!

How does this affect prescriptions called in over the phone. Lately, we've been getting a slew of fake Vicodin call ins. #40 tabs for a 5 day supply. 🙄

I don't understand how anyone could ever think that sounds real. At least make it 30 tabs for 30 days. How dumb do people think we are...? Hmm... nevermind.

And once-daily Vicodin is believable? 1-2 q4-6h is pretty standard...so 40 tabs is pretty reasonable. Besides, you can't call in a 30 days supply of a control.

Oh ok. I wouldn't know because the only time I see controlled substances are putting them into pyxis machines. I haven't quite gotten the hang of filling hospital orders so I try to stay away from them unless there's a pharmacist on duty who doesn't mind helping me when things are slow. But thanks for the info 👍

It turns out that e-prescribing is the adjunct to electronic medical records (EMR) systems that medical providers are now using to avoid dealing with insurance companies for prescriptions. The providers pay a prescriber's fee ($800 per year or more) that gets reimbursed (in spades) by charging their patients a fee ($25 for one Rx, $40 for 2-3 Rx, $75 for 4-5 Rx, and $100 for over 5 Rx). If the patient is employed and has an FSA (flex spending account, pre-tax savings for medical, dental, health, etc.), they can pay for their Rx with their Visa or MC FSA debit card (usually up to $2500 annually). The cost of Rx servicing thus falls on the pharmacies and their patient customers, while the providers make more $$ and EMRs fill their data bases that they can market quality premium data to governments and third parties. Welcome to the future!

RX-Minion, I must be missing something, I don't understand what you talking about. No pt is paying a $25 fee to the doctor for a prescription.
