With all these new gadgets out there such as e-readers, are there any gold standard medical textbooks that would be available electronically? I would imagine something as small as kindle would be cheaper and more manageable than those cumbersome textbooks.

You might be better off asking this in the med school forum, since they are the ones using the medical texts right now. I would also like to know the answer though.

I have thought about getting a reader or the cheapest possible iPad (or now the Motorola Xoom) to avoid lugging text books.

One advantage to a device like iPad or Xoom is that you can download Kindle software, Nook software, and Kobo software, so you can buy e-books not just from Amazon, but also Barnes and Noble and Borders. I don't know too much about this but I have seen that some texts are available in Kindle format but not Nook, and vice versa.

The downside, obviously, is that the cheapest you're going to get an iPad with a warranty (ie not from ebay) is around $400...you can get readers for $100 or less.
