Hey everyone--

My grades are mediocre (3.11, 27P)...and I understand that I NEED to apply early.

I know the cycle starts June 1st, but I will be leaving May 31st for Peru on a medical mission, and won't be coming back till the end of June. With my grades, will June/July still be considered early? Thanks!

yes it will still be early..which schools are you interested in...first choices?

June/July is still considered early, but you could always have someone nicely press the "submit" button for you while you're gone if you have your app done before you go 🙂

Just wondering, is it necessary to have ALL course prereqs finished before submitting your application. I have my last physics class to take this summer quarter(done in August), but all my Bio and Chem and everything else will be finished by June.

Arrange to have your final transcripts sent before you go and notify your LOR writers to write up something and send it to your committee or Interfolio ASAP. Transcripts and LOR seems to most frequently hold things up.

I already have a copy of my transcripts (i've heard that they do slow things up) and I have letter writers jsut anxious to build me up...lol. Also, doesn't AACOMAS wipe out their entire database when a new cycle begins? Since I will be leaving the 31st...the day BEFORE the cycle begins, I won't have any way of filling anything out before I leave so that someone can just submit it for me. If anyone knows a way around this...let me know please!

-Thanks, Pat

Ok...so it will still be considered early...but with my GPA (3.11) and MCAT (27P)...will it be early enough ? Thanks again

Umm..well, considering my grades and MCAT, I can't really be picky. But I would love to go to either DMU, UNE, PCOM, or WVSOM...

What part of Peru will you be in? They have internet places in most cities, even in south america. Fill out you applications down there.

The biggest pain is to get your transcripts sent in. I had fax paperwork around. I applied from the Middle East last summer.

I left for a trip to Europe pretty much the entire month of June last year, and got back the 27th. However, I did submit my AACOMAS app. before I left and made sure my transcripts would get to AACOMAS while I was gone. Contact your letter of recommendation writers NOW and let them know what your deadlines are. Professors always seem to be going on vacation or something right when you need them to write you a letter, and a previous poster hit the nail right on the head when they said that it's the letter writers that hold you up.

AACOMAS will be open for new applications in May, so you can start working on it then. Polish up your personal statement, and make sure you work on two separate personal statements: one for AACOMAS that will be a short one, and the one that you'll send to schools. The latter essay will likely need to contain things like why you chose to apply to school ---COM, and what characteristics you feel you could bring to the class, etc. Do a search on secondary essay topics; you'll find that many folks have listed what each school asks individually, which is nice.

If you've done all that, then by the time you get back in July your AACOMAS should have been completed and submitted to all the schools you selected, your letters of recommendation should be at the schools, and you might even have some secondary applications waiting for you in the mail. Finish them the day you get them and send them out either priority or express mail the NEXT DAY. To review:

BEFORE YOU LEAVE
-Fill out AACOMAS application online, pay fee, and submit.
-Arrange for all your transcripts to arrive at AACOMAS during your trip.
-Get addresses for all the schools you intend to apply to, and have your letter writers send them in mid-June to all of those schools. They should also arrive while you're gone if you give your recommendors enough advance notice.
-Polish up personal statement(s).

WHEN YOU GET BACK
-Be checking online periodically while you're gone to make sure that AACOMAS has completed and submitted your application. They tend to need a little nudge every now and then so take the email address/phone of AACOMAS with you and contact them if you can if it's closing in on the end of June and still nothing has happened.
-If AACOMAS has held up their end of the deal, you should get home and have some secondaries waiting for you, or else they should be on the way. This means that during July/August you should be very busy filling out secondaries as described above, and going on interviews starting in early August and continuing through the fall.

--->If you do it like this, you will be fine. I've just described to you exactly what I did last year and I had one acceptance in hand before Halloween, and another before Thanksgiving. It made for a nice holiday season!
My stats were similar to yours, with 3.4 cumulative, 2.9 science and 30P MCAT. You'll be fine! Just make sure you rock those interviews!!!

Nope. You'll just have to indicate that you are in fact going to finish the prereqs before you matriculate. 🙂

My MCAT was five points lower than yours and I got my applied at the beginning of October (finished in the end and first interview in the beginning of November) due to an overseas transcript arriving late (damn Ozs).
Early July is early enough.

If you are applying to DMU, just make sure your science GPA is a 3.0 or you will get denied.

My pre-med advisor at college said not to let the "nervous nellies" tell you that mid-late June is late. Just make sure you turn those secondaries around, and even consider some sort of express mail.

Your stats are fine and end of June is definitely VERY early. What is more important is to work on the secondaries as soon as you get them. That is where most people, including myself, seem to lag. So, enjoy your trip, cause it may be the last one you will be taking for a while.
