i know if we apply early decision to an MD school.. we have to wait for a decision to apply to any other MD school.. but does that apply to DO schools also or can we apply to all the DO schools we want while waiting for a decision from an MD school?

could someone either let me know where this info is stated.. or can a few people confirm this just so i know for sure.. thanks a lot everyone

I think it applies to all med schools, which DO schools are, and probably even graduate programs. It is a contractual obligation.

I think a lot of people have asked this same question and what I get from generally, is that it's not legally illegal but its sorta unethical or frown upon to a good degree.

Do a search of this. I'm sure you'll get some answers. Personally, if you're applying early acceptance to an allopathic school, you should have the numbers to get in. Applying to osteopathic early is sorta unnecessary. You can wait if you don't get in from the early acceptance school and apply osteopathic and allopathic.

I think the person answering ur question...scarlet, might have misread ur question. you can apply to only one school ED, but u can apply to as many schools as you want regular decision. even DO schools. so u can apply to 1 school ED, as many DO and MD programs regular. applying ED doesn't mean u can't apply to another school. if you get in ED, u have to withdraw from the other places (if i had a second chances, I would have applied like that) cuz I mean, if you just want to get in somewhere, unlike having to school between 3-4 schools, just apply ED to the one u think you can get into or really like. what have you got to lose? but look at what u have to gain 🙂

Uh, no. If you apply to any school as early decision, that's the only school you can apply to. If you find out they rejected you (they tell you by the end of September), then you can quickly add more schools to the AMCAS, but not until you get rejected from that ED school.

Yep. Prowler is right about AMCAS schools. Now the DO schools use a different application service- AACOMAS, which is completely independent of AMCAS. What this means is that yes, you CAN apply DO schools regardless of your MD app situation. Some DO schools aslo have early decision programs, however. And correspondingly, you can only apply to one DO early decision program. But you can apply to one DO early decision, one MD decision OR one MD early decision, many DO regular decisions, OR one DO early decision, many MD regular decisions OR many DO and MD regular decisions.

Trust me on this one- I applied to both MD and DO schools last year.

thanks sga (and everyone else).. what i'm trying to do is apply early decision to one MD school.. and a bunch of regulars to DO schools.. now if i get in then ill go and if not.. then at least i'll have the possible backups with DO schools.. however, if anyone has definite proof that this is illegal or watever else.. PLEASE let me know

I literally just got off the phone with AMCAS. They said if you are applying early decision (ED) to an allopathic school (MD), you are welcome to apply to any osteopathic school that does not have an ED program. In order to find out if the osteopathic schools you want to apply to are ED, you have to call each school and ask them individually. So long as they do not participate in an ED program, you can apply there even while you are waiting to hear back from your MD ED program.

How do people find these threads?? Either way, the person you are answering is already in med school...
