I was just reading about the Early Decision Program at UW Madison and wonder if it is worth it.

For a variety of reasons (one of them being not moving for at least 5 years because my husband may be hired as a Madison fireman in the next few weeks after a 6 step application process over 7 months) I have chosen UW as my top choice for med school. They say you can submit an early decision app no later than August 1st and you cannot apply to any other programs until notification of whether or not you got in. This is usually by October 1st. Only after the 1st if you didn't get in can you begin submitting apps to other med schools. They will only consider you if they are the only school you apply to initially and if they reject you then you can try your luck at other schools

Is this NUTS to do? Is October too late to start sending out apps to med schools if you have only applied for early decision at one?

Hi there,
Most people who apply Early Decision exceed the averages for matriculated students i.e. are very strong candidates. If this is not you, do not take the risk of applying ED. If you are a very strong candidate, the later application won't make much difference. If not, you could find yourself not getting accepted anywhere because you were too late.

ED is a very bad idea for anyone who is not well above average. Just strongly wanting to attend a particular medical school is not enough. Some schools will release you very early if you are do not meet their criteria for ED. Get out the MSAR, look at the averages for matriculating students and draw your conclusion from there.
