since ophtho (along with others) still used the sfmatch, i was wondering if one does not match can they still match with the regular NRMP match...i.e. if a person applies for ophtho and fails to match, can he/she still jump in the NRMP match and go for other residencies i.e. general surgery or whateva?

Yes, you have to register for both and send out applications for both, because by the time you find out the results of the SFmatch, it will be January. This will be later than most interviews for the NRMP.

It can easily be done, because you will need to register for the NRMP anyway due to the fact that a prelim/transistional year is needed for Ophtho.
