Like some of you, I want to maintain my exercise routine while studying for the board. I am thinking of buying a earphone that can cancel out noise in the gym. I heard the new bose in ear earphone is good, but is concern about its noise cancellation ability. Just wondering what brand and model earphones have people used and recommend when they work out or when they are on the airplane. Thanks.

I use Crossroads Mylar X3s. They're not noise canceling, but in-ear and I've used them in noisy environments - ie on a plane, w/ no problems. I wanted something that sounded good for music, as well as for lectures, and these seem pretty good for the price. The only catch is that, as far as I know, the only place to get them is from Singapore - but shipping is free - http://www.jaben.net/shopping.html

The "shure" earbuds are the bomb. They don't use the "noise cancelling" technology, they are actually better and have better sound. But with that comes price of course. I love mine, and some of my friends use them as well.

I'm a huge fan of my Etymotic 6i headphones. They're not "noise canceling" but instead they are isolating. I use them on airplanes, on the subway, everywhere else and they are phenomenal - plus the sound response on them is incredible. I find the foam earpieces much better and more comfortable than the cones, but I think that's a matter of personal fit.

Personally, I don't use them in the gym because I don't want to get them all sweaty, but other than that I use them everywhere.

And don't buy them direct from the manufacturer, they charge an arm and a leg. Go to a place like B&H and get them for half the price. They have a few other models, but the 6i seems the best bang for the buck.

I think that it is mainly a personal preference. I looked long and hard when I was studying and I settled first of the Etymotic's as posted above but found them uncomfortable for me. I then bought the Shure e3's on ebay and I love them. They come with several different ear bud styles so that they are maximally comfortable for everyone. They are not active noise cancelling but in my opinion work better than earplugs. So i suggest checking out Shure earphones. Just my two cents....

If you want to truly simulate the situation of the actual exam, get the most painful and least effective earphones you can find.🙂
