East Coast Ob/Gyn Programs

Well...I interviewed at Penn and Dartmouth and cancelled an interview at UVA. Here are my opinions.

UPenn- excellent name recognition, great reputation for placing residents into fellowship. I got the feeling that the residents were very well trained and happy. About 95% of your rotations are done at Penn. They are doing some fetal surgery there because CHOP is near by. Their MFM program is rebuilding because Macones left and went to Wash U. Overall very strong program, I ranked it highly.

Dartmouth- small program in the middle of nowhere, but they have the most beautiful hospital I have ever seen. It looks like an upscale mall. I question whether you can possible receive the same level of training there being in the middle of nowhere. But the program is moving up in the world having recently hired their chairman from BIDMC in Boston. He is an REI guru and is hoping to bring an REI fellowship to Dartmouth. Last...you have to do nine months during your first and second year about 1.5 hours away from where you live. That is not my cup of tea, but it might appeal to some.

UVA- I hear good things about their Onco program, but I heard that OB numbers were very low and that the residents were getting farmed out all over central Virginia in an effort to get numbers. They also just lost a resident. They can only match 4 with this incoming intern class.

i have heard the same thing about delivery numbers. also, i would verify the onc status. i have heard (albiet second or third hand, from rotating med studs typically) that several onc faculty have left.

Thanks for the info!
